If GGG refuses the step-aside money the WBC will probably screw him over as they did Martinez and several others. Maybe they'll elevate Cotto to super-champion.

That's his fault how? You too small for a division then don't fight in it...it's that simple.

Golovkin's done well, but Alvarez is arguably the 3rd biggest star in boxing. There's a reason they wanted Cotto/Alvarez and not Cotto/Golovkin to show Cotto on HBO.

Why not? Neither of them are really middleweights so why should they be fighting for a MW title?

Loeffler stated last night that GGG is the mandatory defense for the winner of Cotto - Geale. Geale will still have to fight GGG if he wins.

The reason is that Cotto would not agree to fight GGG even if he had to give up his fortune, his family and his career. At least they were relatively certain that they could get a fight between Cotto and Canelo signed. Cotto would have retired or moved to another network and vacated his title if he had to fight Golovkin next.

              Well at least they're trying.

I laughed so hard when Rubio got screwed out of his because his apparent deal said he'd only fight for the title if Martinez won. Since Cotto won, he got blown to the wayside.

WBC will find a way, they always do, they need to drop the interim cuz they're just sucking money at this point

The WBC is full of s***! That Princess Cotton was entitled to make ONE optional defence before facing GGG, now the WBC is trying to shaft GGG by allowing Cotto & Canelo. NO! I hope Geale destroys Cotto and then unifies with GGG. This is getting f****** ridiculous, corruption and lies from a boxing sanctioning body what a surprise!!!!!!!!!!!

It is too bad Cotto would probably choose to fight someone else than to defend his title against his mandatory. But Either way I dont see Cotto beating Canelo and really dont see him beating GGG. Cotto before the loss against Pac, Mayweather and Margarito would have been a great fight but not anymore. And yes I know Cotto was a lot smaller back in his weight and you cant compare these 3 fighters in their prime at the same weight class cause it never happened and they are completely different but what we can say is there is no way Cotto beats either Canelo, or Gennedy. I see a Cotto on the Canvas against both of these fighters today.

One of the problems was HBO jumping in and basically forcing Cotto to agree to a Canelo fight next. That kind of threw a wrench into the works. On one hand you have GGG, a fighter with an exclusive contract with HBO and on the other there was Cotto who was trying to find an empty can to fight. So HBO basically forced him to pick a somewhat decent opponent and agree to the Canelo fight. Unfortunately by doing that, they screwed GGG and his mandatory status.

Now we have Cotto caught between HBO-Canelo and Golovkin/WBC mandatory. It would all be simple to defuse if Cotto only agreed to give a signed guarantee that the winner would fight GGG but for whatever reason known only to himself, he refuses to give that guarantee. I guess it all goes back to "No one tells Miguel Cotto what to do with his career. Only Miguel Cotto will decide what Miguel Cotto does."

And Loeffler basically calling out the WBC on the mandatory status has put them in a situation where they have to keep their word to GGG or look terrible to the sports world who most definitely will be watching what develops.

All that to say I expect Cotto to vacate or be stripped and then to go on and fight Canelo with no title at stake.

There is no need for Cotto to pay GGG to step aside. The WBC makes up the rules as they go along. They will allow Cotto to fight Alvarez after Geale without punishing Cotto and without an agreement that Cotto will fight GGG after he beats Alvarez.

Cotto can fight whoever the hell he wants and the WBC will allow it, just as they allowed Alvarez to hold the 154-pound WBC belt for three years WITHOUT fighting a manadatory opponent.

There is not a damn thing that GGG can do about it because the WBC stands to make a hell of a much larger sanctioning fee for Cotto/Alvarez than they do for Cotto/Golovkin. GGG is a nobody and is being treated as such by the WBC.

On another note, after watching GGG's fight against a glorified sparring partner in Willie Munroe Jr., I think Cotto would KO GGG in seven rounds if they ever met in the ring.
