Comments Thread For: Team GGG: No Cotto-Canelo Without Step Aside Deal

WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (33-0, 30KOs) is going to push to fight the winner of the June 6th bout between WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and challenger Daniel Geale.

Golovkin, who holds the WBC interim-middleweight title, is the mandatory challenger to Cotto. If Cotto wins, he is expected to face Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in the fall. Golovkin wants to return in September and has his eye on the WBC title.

So far there is no step aside agreement in place where Cotto can make another voluntary defense.

Is Golovkin going to play hardball, screwing his benefactor (HBO) by messing with their big fall fight. While also messing with two dudes who he needs to move beyond what he is, making them less likely to ever deal with him.

Fishing the WBC belt out of a trashcan doesn't really do a lot for Golovkin~

I will believe it when I see it.

Good, you will either have to give up that belt or get it on with him. Your choice.

Yeah. I know it sucks but the best move is to take some step aside $$$ and fight the winner. The mando is his only bargaining chip. Cotto vacating gives GGG a shot at the title but it won't be a big ppv fight.

Good to see golovkin putting his foot down. Enough of the big names ducking and dodging him. GGG wants the wbc belt, and if canelo-cotto is to happen, its not going to be with the wbc middleweight belt as some sort of bargaining chip.

The WBC belt is irrelevant. It's the lineal title and a big name on Golovkin's resume that's important.

Yea there is a time to play hardball and a time not to play hardball.

I have wanted him to stand up to HBO for a while, but in this case it would be very counter productive toward what is good for his career. He may not get what he wants anyway, but playing hardball here makes getting what he wants (and needs) virtually impossible.
