Comments Thread For: Golovkin's Promoter on HBO Deal, Network Television

Gennady Golovkin is one of the HBO franchise fighters and come May 16th against Willie Monroe, big numbers are expected. The landscape of boxing has shifted somewhat this year because of the Al Haymon investment in putting boxing across multiple platforms on network television.

Golovkin regularly is a ratings draw on the HBO platforms and has taking the boxing world by storm one knockout at a time. But one would wonder how his numbers would transcend on a platform that has a much bigger reach outside of the HBO subscribers. Managing Director of K2, Tom Loeffler spoke on the the shift of boxing from a subscription based network to terrestrial television.

I could see Golovkin getting stripped of his title when Jacobs/Golovkin goto purse bids and Haymon wins and moves the fight off HBO.

Would be ironic givien that Golovkin could never enforce his WBA mandatory status with Sturm or N'Dam.

Or like the Quillen purse bid where Roc Nation outbid Haymon and rather then let his fighter fight on that card he made Quillen vacate his belt and a career payday. The point is Haymon will not let his fighters fight on HBO or on any card he doesn't want them too. He will either overbid knowing the other side has a contract preventing them from fighting on a different network or make his fighter vacate. Haymon fighters are "free agents" so there should be no problem with them fighting on HBO, Roc Nation or whatever other promotion/network. But we all know they won't. Haymon = killer of great fights.

Yes, and Apple should have no problem sharing their software with Microsoft.

That is permitted due to the fact that Apple has such a small part of the pie. You will notice that Microsoft cannot prevent their software from running on the Apple platform. Reverse the roles and the situations would reverse as well.

ya and because its haymon it will be the only time the public takes the side of the fighter/promoter pulling out of the purse bid. If that keeps up tho haymon will control all the belts unfortunately. that was shown when kovalov pulled out of the purse bid and people still defended him for the simple fact they dont like haymon. I mean just food for thought if stevenson pulled out of the purse bid because haymon thought hbo would win and that hurts his network or network contract etc i find it hard to believe people would of defended that

It's almost impossible nowadays to escape from the influence of Haymon in the boxing world. When a fighter is under his management the champion must fight under PBC because it's impossible to win a purse bid and I doubt Al'd let a fighter from PBC to fight to another TV channel. Boxing is tied up to Haymon.

I don't think WBA will do it

They know they're about to get dumped and if they put GGG in a position to dump his belt, they won't.

No, it's just that some people understand that Kovalev had to be pulled out of the purse bid because he can't fight off HBO and Duva couldn't win it.

And the answer to your next question is that I don't know why Duva asked for Kovalev to be made mandatory for Stevenson if she couldn't win the purse bid, but that's what she did.
