  • Comments Thread For: Golovkin Sought a Southpaw Challenge, We Picked Monroe

In lieu of a fight with middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, Gennady Golovkin and his team sought the kind of challenge that would motivate Golovkin, selecting Willie Monroe Jr. for an HBO fight on May 16 in Southern California.

“Willie Monroe made the most sense. He fought on ESPN four times within the last 12 months. He won the Boxcino tournament. And he’s from here, from upstate New York. He’s known within the United States,” said Golovkin’s promoter, Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, in an interview in Manhattan on April 25.

"Cuba guy"!!! I LOVE IT! There is no better way to make someone irrelevant than not knowing his name when you talk about him.

Monroe is a sympathetic young prospect with very good skills, however I think this is too early for him and I don't know if his power is enough to keep Golovkin at bay. He will land at will with his jabs because Golovkin has a garbage defense but I think sooner or later the Kazakh will catch him with something big.

And instead of fighting somebody Golovkin just obliterated, Cotto could've fought somebody worthwhile... guess not. Murray probably next for Cotto, or Monroe since he loves Golovkin bread crumbs without fighting the real guy

I will eagerly await the final punch stats to once again disprove this BS about how GGG has poor defense. Of all these people who dump on Golovkin's defense, not one has ever produced any stats to back up their point.

Oh yes, Cuba guy. Do you have a waiver from Haymon so that he can fight on HBO? No? Then STFU and go away.
