Did she ask for a purse bid or mandatory status? Seems to me everyone wants to ask a purse bid when they think they will win it, not so keen on them if they're likely to lose it.

It doesn't really matter whether Main Events wanted Kovalev to be the mandatory or not or whether it's about the purse bid at all. What matters is HBO and PBC are deeply interested in making financial gain from this fight.

Ultimately it's the fans that are screwed by this. I couldn't care less where the fight takes place or whom to point finger to, i do, however just wants it to happen...

She requested he be made #1 at the convention. She knew the fight would go to a purse bid given that Kov was exclusively signed to HBO and Stevenson who, at the time of her request, was on SHowtime. He is also affiliatedwith Haymon, who she knew was starting the PBC series on NBC.

You know exactly what is going on here.

Kovalev is probably the hottest thing going for Main Event and HBO along with GGG. They're not going to risk somebody they have invested a lot in for Haymon to take it to PBC. I'm pretty sure Haymon and the WBC has their own thing going on too with the purse bid. It's pretty much politics and chessmatch right now. Take a look back at the Hopkins/Stevenson situation, it's repeating itself.

I'm not sure Kovalev/Stevenson happens anytime soon although I wish I could be wrong. The only thing to come out of this is Stevenson has a good chance to lose sooner than later when he ACTUALLY faces a legit opponent so he can disappear to oblivion....

OK, your 1st quote made it seem otherwise.

I think it does matter about the mando status as it was an unprecedented move by the WBC based on an unusual request by Duva. SHe got what she wanted, then walked away from it.

          • All that chest beating and posturing only for Team Kovalev to run away like little b*tches in the end.

              • You might find the article on ESPN very informative as to Duva's reasons for refusing to go to bid at this time. I think she makes a number of good points other than the fact she will not consider trying to get HBO to give Kovalev a pass for one fight if required.

                http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id...urse-bid-order

"Rule 2.21 states that championship contracts are due for presentment within seven days of a purse bid. It also states that the date and location must be specified within 15 days of a purse bid. It is quite difficult to specify a date for the Stevenson bout months before the Mohammedi bout takes place. Typically, purse bids are built upon offers from television networks and sites. As television networks generally focus upon one bout at a time, and as so many worldwide networks are focused primarily on the upcoming megafight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather right now, a Kovalev/Stevenson bout is not yet on their radar.

"Similarly, sites want certainty, as well. Kovalev and Stevenson are both scheduled to fight other opponents this summer. As we all know, this is boxing and anything can happen. Fighters could be injured or even lose a match. When an arena locks in a date, it locks out others who may wish to contract for the arena on that same date. The same holds for major television networks. Thus the reluctance of arenas and networks in this regard is understandable."

Duva went on to write that while she was ready to negotiate with Michel "on a 50-50 co-promotion basis at this time, in contrast, a purse bid must necessarily be made based upon a fixed number. In all practicality, no matter how much time one needs to promote this bout, its value cannot be determined accurately so very far in advance."
This is the major problem with her argument, however. She refuses to discuss any potential compromise regarding the network for the fight. It's HBO or nothing. I believe that PBC could never do a fight like this justice and give it the presentation it deserves, but you have to be open to discussion.

"Sergey has a contract with HBO and he will be fighting on HBO. If Adonis doesn't want to do that, God bless him," she told ESPN.com. "Sergey is the best light heavyweight in the world. If Adonis wants to prove he's the best he's going to have to fight Sergey and he's going to have to do it on terms that are doable under Sergey's HBO contract."

                Not so fast, Michel said.

"Bring the proposal from HBO and I bring a proposal from a PBC-affiliated network and we go where it has the most value," he said. "I'm willing to negotiate but she has to be willing to maximize the revenue. If she doesn't want to do that then stop trying to make everyone believe we tried to avoid Kovalev. When the WBC decided to name the winner of Kovalev-Pascal the mandatory we were on board and we are not backing out. Let's go with the network that can put up the most money."

this might not be the case but it sure looks like it though, doesn't it.

their bluff was called and they folded.

The major problem with her BS argument is she knew all this when she asked to be ranked #1.
