Comments Thread For: Quillin Apologetic, Blames Himself For Weight Mishap

Peter Quillin once held one of the middleweight belts before dropping it. Once vacated, Andy Lee knocked out Matt Korobov to get that title. Lee will face Quillin on the undercard of “Premier Boxing Champions” this Saturday on NBC. The fight is a non-title encounter after Quillin failed to make weight on Friday.

“Andy is a newly crowned champion. I would be disrespectful if I would say something disrespectful of somebody who’s made himself a champion. I have no bad things about him. I think one of his greatest strengths is that he lost twice, came back and made himself look very good and win the championship of the world," said Quillin, who dethroned Hassan N’Dam back in October 2012 and made three successful title defenses.

I don't understand how we see this more and more in modern boxing. I don't ever remember this happening as much before with the old school fighters.

Seems like this generation doesn't understand the meaning of sacrifice and hunger. To let weight deter you from winning a championship is inexcusable.

Quillin not only let the fans down, he let himself down.

Knew it, the guy has been off for a year and the last time he fought he gained 20 pounds overnight.

Hopefully team Lee puts a rehydration cap on him for his unprofessionalism, 10 pounds max.

I agree, been watching over 15 years and my memory isn't perfect but I rarely remember guys coming in over weight, especially for big fights.

because with the "day-before" weigh in nonsense, modern fighters are usually fighting 1 if not 2 divisions below where they SHOULD be fighting. Only a matter of time before they miss weight......

Haymon payed BJ Saunders step aside money, and now his fighter can't win the belt even if he wins. Al must be angry.

I agree, but what do you say to those who suggest fight day weigh-ins are worse, and potentially dangerous, because you have a guy sitting in a sauna, starving himself hours before a fight.
