Comments Thread For: Garcia Gives Reasons For Facing Peterson At 143 Pounds

Danny Garcia gave an honest yet telling explanation on a conference call Thursday as to why his April 11 fight against Lamont Peterson won’t be fought for their 140-pound titles.

They agreed to a catch weight of 143 pounds, according to Garcia, because he has had increasing difficulty getting down to the 140-pound limit and didn’t feel he had enough time during this training camp to cut the extra weight in a way that’d benefit him.

Not sure what there is for Garcia at welterweight. Herrera kinda exposed him a bit. If you won't stand in front of him or run in hands down, he runs out of ideas. He was short on ideas against Morales and Judah - both well over the hill. He had no idea how to get to Herrera. The bigger, longer, stronger boxers at 147 won't be easy for Garcia at all. I'd tab Thurman, Broner, Alexander, Bradley, of course Mayweather or Pacquiao, and several others to beat Garcia at this point.

Headline should say, "Garcia gives reasons, excuses for catchweight."

Didn't have enough time? fight was announced in early January. Champions are held to a higher standard.

This catchweight is ******ed and robbed this fight of one of the reasons people wanted to see it to begin with, which was the unification.

It's the same **** that happened with Matthysse/Peterson. It's a way for both to hang on to those belts no matter who wins.

he's just holding Herrera's title hostage

he can't man up and go the weight class where he belongs

if you can't make the weight, then you shouldn't get to make up your own class. That's ridiculous.

He'll probably fight at 140 with a Salka opponent.

Garcia and Canelo get away with this bs because of their built in fan base.

it's hilarious Peterson gets to pretend he's a 140 champion after getting blasted by Matthyssee.

he could actually lose in 1 round again and still be 140 champ, right?

Damn shame. Haymon is so bad for boxing its unbelievable. You think golden boy or top rank would have allowed the titles to not be on the line? I will not be watching this fight on free t.v. Out of protest. I will wait till it comes on YouTube

This is really a joke. You got one guy (Peterson) who won a belt by cheating (PEDs) gets caught is fined and busted but still gets to keep the belt he never won fairly in the first place. Then fights a catchweight gets blown out but since it was a catchweight he still keeps the belt he never really earned in the first place. Now he's fighting another catchweight and if he loses he will still be world champ? Meanwhile the other guy (Garcia) got his butt whooped against Herrera and told the world he wouldn't give him a rematch because he was moving to 147. Over a year later and he hasn't defended his belts or made weight. But isn't fighting at 147 and is basically having Haymon pay guys off to delay having to defend his belts. Must be nice to have Haymon in your back pocket to pay guys off because you can lose fights, not defend your title, get busted with PED's and still remain "world champ".
