Golovkin is not the middleweight champion of the world. He has a middleweight title belt. HUGE DIFFERENCE.
If GGG retired today, how would he be remembered 20 years from now?

He would be remembered as one of the most dominant MWs of all time. However, they would also start picking apart his resume, on the other hand.Comment

I'm a GGG fan, but let's be honest here. Outside of extreme hardcore boxing fans, no one would remember himComment

I'm not saying Cotto is better than GGG, I'm saying Cotto won the middleweight championship of the world and has not lost that title in the ring or retired. So GGG may look better but he is not the champion until he beats the champion. I'm sure they will fight fairly soon. In boxing things take months and years to materialize, not days and weeks.Comment

A lot like Sergio's reign at middleweight. Lots of ability but never really had the competition to showcase how good he really was.Comment

With the pro resume he has right now, he would be forgotten by all but a few. I really like GGG and Kovalev a lot, both guys are fearsome fighters, they have MOST fighters scared to death to fight them, heck nobody really says anything about them. In order for people to remember you 20 years later, you have to do something great, but also if your a killer, people want to know who you killed. GGG hasn't fought a great fighter yet (not really his fault). If he just keeps fighting 4 times a year, that at some point will open the door to his greatness.
There has always been fighters who were ducked, the best thing he can do is get all the belts, then anyone who is good in his division has to fight him, if they want the belts/ bigger paydays, because GGG will not vacate a belt, like some fighters.Comment

Geez, what a pointless thread.
Two things:
1. Why would a boxer be remembered if they retired before their biggest fights?
2. Most boxers won't be remembered at all. It's been a niche sport for the last 20 years.
Leave it to these so-called "boxing fans" to do everything they can to bash one of the most talented and exciting fighters in boxing, as well as maybe THE best ambassador for the sport.Last edited by Contra; 03-19-2015, 04:02 PM.Comment
