Comments Thread For: Kovalev, Pascal Both Make IBF’s Second-Day Weigh-in

Tonight’s fight between Sergey Kovalev and Jean Pascal is for three of the major world titles at light heavyweight. Under the rules of one of them, the International Boxing Federation, boxers must have a second weigh-in, this one on the morning of the fight, and cannot come in any more than 10 pounds above the division’s weight limit.

Both Kovalev and Pascal did just that.

Kovalev, who was at 174 pounds on Friday afternoon, was comfortably under the 185-pound line on Saturday morning, checking in at 183.6 pounds, according to promoter Main Events.

Great rule, I like it. They should all adopt that.

Whilst I can see the point, I'm not so sure I like this rule.

I think if someone is capable of putting on 15-20lb's after a weigh in e.g. JCCjr, then they're clearly draining themselves too much to make the weight in the first place. I think they should be allowed to put on whatever weight they like over night. It's another dimension to a fight which is massively misunderstood by a casual fan - cutting to make weight is a very intricate process of balancing diet and training so as to not come in overweight, but to also not cut too much to the point where you can't compete at your best.

Let em weigh what they want after the weigh in!

They should all return to fight day weigh-ins. And 15 rounds for title fights.

No, Forget that 15 round bull****. Its unnessecary punishment for the fighters, takes to much out of fighters. It also would make the fights more boring because they would have to lower the pace to make 15. There is a reason they changed it from 15 to 12.

I grew up in the era of 15 round title fights and many fights would have had a totally different ending if they had only gone 12 rounds. And those fights were anything but boring. There are ATGs who would not be considered that today if not for 15 rounders. They separated the champions from the contenders.

                  Yeah.. haha

Youll find most of the big stars wont even fight for the IBF strap, or if they do, hardly defend it. I can see why, they can fight for the WBC/WBA/WBO straps instead who have handy promoter/commission ties, who don't have the balls to enforce rules and mandatories in favour of big pay check, or make up special belts to this end.

I highly suggest people do some research on weight, putting on rapid weight in under 30 hours, and which styled athlete it affects more...because frankly people have taken the whole weight drain thing and run with it without the facts. Power punchers like Maidana, Garcia, Kovalev, Cotto, etc are not affected as much as guys like Bradley, Mayweather, Lara who are mobile and rely on stamina to execute their styles.
