Damn, hope Cotto gets back in the ring soon. All this inactivity for an aging vet who has been through several wars will not do him any favors. It sucks we missed out on a second Mega fight but there's still hope. It's not like Canelo is tied to Haymon or TR and Cotto linking up with Jay Z will most likely leave that door open for the fight on a future date.

That really doesn't matter when RocNation can offer Cotto a lot more advantages outside of boxing. It's strange to say because Top Rank is one of the best boxing promoters around still and probably the best the past 50 years, however, boxing needs to spread it's wings. Jay-Z and Haymon are willing to do that whereas Top Rank is not.

No amount of guaranteed money is going to set up Cotto for the rest of life like Rocnation can outside of boxing. Top Rank is not the big dog in town anymore and they have no way of figuring out how to change that.

I don't know that I buy that.

For example, it was Top Rank, who after getting upset with Greenburg/HBO, negotiated to take Pacquiao to SHO....and sought to get CBS involved in showing programing and ads to promote the ppv fight.

That was a huge change in the sport at the time, and eventually led to a lot of changes at both HBO and CBS.

Part of what's going on in the sport now can be traced back to that.

So I don't buy that Top Rank can't adapt.

But let's see how successful the PBC/time buy approach is before we see how Top Rank will adapt to it (aside from the rumored cable deal with TruTV deal).

And let's see how Roc Nation actually does as a boxing promoter before we declare them successful...because they haven't done much actual boxing promoting yet.

As for the Cotto deal...I get that it was about more than just boxing...but this is a boxing forum, so with the opportunities to put on concerts and develop his foundation aside, I'm more interested to see how the boxing side of this deal shakes out going forward.
