True. GGG/Pirog was his chance but it fell through because if injury.

MArtinez was half dead by the time GGG became a good opponent

Like I said, easy money fights.

The way I see it, as a former Martinez hater. He paid his dues with the Pavlik and Williams fights. He was loved and adored by fans after those wins, and when HBO forced him to fight Dzinzuruk, because they were supposedly "fed up" with letting champions get easy fights and they wanted to make an example starting with Martinez who had just KO'ed Williams, the love from fans fueled even more. Martinez was calling out Chavez Jr, Cotto, Pacquiao, and Mayweather and getting support from fans that he should get those fights just like GGG is calling out Cotto, Canelo and Chavez Jr (albeit GGG doesn't have wins on the level of Pavlik or Williams). Then came Pirog and GGG and everything went downhill for Martinez's relationship with the fans as a hero who doesn't get big fights and doesn't get any easy fights. He got two easy fights and the fans erupted with hate.

You have to remember GGG didn't burst onto the scene until around the time Martinez fought Chavez. After that he was out with injury for a while. By the time he came back a lot of fans gave him a pass to have a hometown fight against Murray. Once again he got injured and was out for a while. Once he finally came back nobody could really fault him for taking the Cotto fight but the feeling was GGG should be next. However there was a vocal minority all the way back to the Proksa fight that GGG would beat Martinez.

All the bullshit with Universum meant that Golovkin wasn't launched in the US until about the same time Sergio fought Jr. The Proksa massacre alone was probably enough for Sergio's team to decide Golovkin was bad news.

If it wasn't for all the injuries there's a good chance he'd have fought Golovkin by now, but it's just as likely he'd be chasing Canelo.

People are quick to forget that Martinez was an avoided fighter, took his chance and fought Williams on a 2 week notice after Pavlik cancelled.

                  Martinez paid his dues.

The exact same reason GGG won't fight Sergio Mora.

I wanted him to fight GGG for years. He didn't fight him because he didn't want to get knocked out in my opinion. Yep, I said it. Martinez was afraid to fight his rightful challenger and the new champ Cotto is also afraid of the real middleweight champ.
