Because he was injured and Cotto finally said yes.
Why Didn't Martinez ever fight GGG?

"Who would give a flying fuck, and why are you even asking? Who knows Gennady Golovkin other than you, me and a few other people? How many people would he bring to the table? How much money would he generate? ... He is a very good fighter, but it's a fight that economically makes no sense." - Lou DibellaComment

It was pretty obvious.
A guy who was ducked himself in his early 30s, finally got in position where he can get easy money fights took advantage of that opportunity. Chavez Jr and Cotto PPV's to end your career? Plus he earned a sh*load of money for that Murray fight in Argentina.
I'm pretty sure if Golovkin was offered fights from Canelo and D. Andrade he would choose Canelo. It would only be the smart thing to do.Comment

Pirog fight should have happened.
The timing for the Golovkin fight to happen just wasn't there.Comment

And at the time he said this, his comments were actually pretty true. GGG was so unknown at the time, I wasn't even a hater yet, because I really didn't know who he was and I was on here everyday."Who would give a flying fuck, and why are you even asking? Who knows Gennady Golovkin other than you, me and a few other people? How many people would he bring to the table? How much money would he generate? ... The problem is Martinez was fighting Macklin and Barker and Murray when DiBella was saying that, so he was full of **** to say it.Comment
