Why Didn't Martinez ever fight GGG?

Just curious because he is roughly the same size at 5'10 as GGG. I don't recall anyone wanting Sergio to fight GGG. They seemed content with Macklin, Chavez Jr, Darren Barker and Murray. They seemed excited for Sergio to fight Cotto and Manny but not so much GGG.

I know he was a phenom before he caught that shot to the temple against Cotto so where was the call to face GGG?

Good question. I think Martinez was playing it smart to stay away from the dangerous fighter that would not generate enough money. Plus I'm sure his promoter had a lot to do with it as well. I remember one promoter watching a Golovkin fight and then saying "I'm not putting my guy in there with that animal." Not sure if it was Martinez's promoter or not though.

You must have been living under a rock. A lot of people were calling for that fight, mostly Golovkin fans.

Martinez fought Cotto because it was a much bigger fight. Pretty obvious to anyone who has an ounce of sense.

GGG wasn't well known until Martinez was at the end. He really didn't bring the money.

I don't think any version of Martinez could have won that fight. GGG cuts off the ring and kills him on the ropes. But it would have been interesting.

Everybody wanted Martinez to fight GGG. At least on this forum. Every time Dibella made a quote 100 comments screaming "you're a duck" ensued.

Lou DiBella. "Who the fuck is Golovkin?" But or course fighting guys like Barker and Murray were much bigger names I'm sure. And then they decided to cherry pick a smaller Cotto which backfired.

It was the same thing with Dmitry Pirog. Lou used to get pissed off anytime anyone asked him about Dmitry, "who the fuck is Pirog?!" Basically they didn't want to take risks after beating Williams.

Same reason DiBella refused to make Martinez/Pirog.
