Mugabi was getting a lot of television exposure and hype for his punching power and KO record. Unfortunately for Mcallum, even though he was far better, did not generate that type of attention. Aside from that Mccallum had done nothing to warrant a fight with Hagler prior to Hagler's fight with Leonard.
Hearns was much more known, proven, and brought in much more money.
That's the only time Mccallum could have fought Hagler because after the Leonard fight Hagler wanted a rematch or nothing.
Hagler never avoided anybody and if the Mccallum fight made sense he would have fought him.
Before the by the end of 1987 McCallum had defended his title 6 times and kayoed hall of famer Julian Jackson who was a touted puncher and undefeated, former titleholders Milton McCrory, David Braxton, Donald Curry, and title challender Luigi MinchilloComment

Depends on how you define "ducking".
But none of the fab 4 were all too keen on facing him...or Julian Jackson, Sambu Kalambay & Michael Nunn for that matter...all would've made much better & viable opponents than alot of the stiffs that the fab 4 were facing during the mid-to-late 80's.
Kalambay was a sleeper...that's why you cant always judge by the eye test but he beat some very good fightersComment

By the time mccallum made his name, the Fab Four was either retired or up in weight beyond jr mid
Hearns-mccallum would have been great at mw around 1988Comment

McCallum did more than Mugabi who knocked out a bunch of fringe contenders for his title shot with Hagler

Duran and Leonard both fought at 160 after 87....Leonard fought Terry norris @ 154....Duran fought joppy in 98 for the wbc 160 title, Barkley in I think 89, n others between 154 n 168Comment

No its not , McCallum was a very dangerous guy that was kept in the background because he was not easy sell marketing , huge huge risk little reward , and its true he used to whip Hearns in sparing .
What really goes on in this sport and what is hyped out to the pubic are 2 different things .Comment

One of my favorite....anyways, as I am a bit bias on this one, because I am Jamaican. That Curry fight was something, and it brings back a lot of memory. Watching this fight in Jamaica with one TV set on block, the yard, living room, I mean the entire community was probably watching that fight on a 19 inch black and white television set.
My dad still thinks Mike beats them all prime for prime, and thinks he was blackballed because he refused to sign with any of the prominent promoter in King and Arum.Comment
