  • Comments Thread For: Canelo Feels Career Boost From Mayweather Fight

Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (44-1-1, 31KOs) has a very positive view of his twelve round decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. from September 2013. The fight was one of the biggest in the last few years, with over 2 million pay-per-view purchases and generating more revenue than any other fight in boxing history. There was an eleven city press tour and non-stop media commitments.

Losing to the best p4p fighter in the world is nothing to hang your head over but what it did do was put a "glass ceiling" over what seemed to be limitless career.

The kid had loads of room to still develop and grow. He never should have weight drained himself though.

I think Canelo bought into the "Mayweather cherry picks his opponents" B.S. and probably thought to himself that Floyd must not be that good. He thought a man who "hand picks" his fights must not be that talented because he fights only the people whom he wants to fight.

On the night of September 13, 2013 Canelo found out first hand that the rumors were all a lie and that Mayweather is just as good as they say he is. It was like Jim Lampley stated during the Mayweather-De La Hoya fight: "fighting Floyd Mayweather is a dose of cold, hard reality."

I'm sure he'll continue to learn, should have been a good experience. A shot Morales exposed a lot of holes in Garcia's game, Garcia learned from that experience as well.

Canelo needs to be positive, he's a young champion and needs to be focus in the year 2015. I do give him a lot of credit for taking fights that trolls said he wouldn't take, like Trout, Lara.

                    True,

but he arguably lost both fights, plus the MD against Floyd.

Canelo has been consistent with it , in order to beat him you need to knock him out.
Hell, even against Mayweather he was about to get away with another robbery.

Let's not forget the ridicolous open scorecards against Trout, nor the visionary 117-111 against Lara.

Canelo cannot even complain about catchweights, since his last few fights were at 155, yet he'll probably fight for the lineal MW title without doing anything to deserve it.

I don't think Canelo is a bad fighter, but his carreer has been built, everything was handed to him, and that's something I cannot respect.
