Johnny caught him beautifully, and yet Mares didn't break after the first KD. He got up and although displayed an immense heart, went about it the wrong way and tried to fight fire with fire while buzzed . Mares was hurt but he knows what he did wrong, and that's what matters. I think Mares takes Jhonny in the rematch and I'm also a huge Gonzalez fan.

Against Santa Cruz, we got ourselves a fight! Everybody else on that list wrecks him.....including the obvious ommision, El Chacal!

if it was just a hiccup, why not fight a credible opponent instead of pounding the crap out of limited opposition?

I could see him giving Lomachenko problems if he comes with an agressive gameplan and makes Loma fight going backwards - he's not comfortable fighting like that (see Salido, Russell Jr in some rounds). But the question is: can Mares take Loma's power punches? After all, he fought bantamweights at 122 and when he moved up to 126 he got hurt by Jhonny and even Ponce de Leon I think.

Mares should avenge his knockout loss first in my opinion. If he can't beat Jhonny Gonzalez in a rematch, then he has no business staying at 126.
Not necessarily, Jhonny is the biggest hitter and one of the top at 126. That's kind of like saying if you can't beat GGG you have no business at 160.

Because that minor mistake in his defense led to a major loss. He endured a grueling string of fights for 2 years before losing to Gonzalez, I'm sure a loss and such a tough regiment would have him considering a slow comeback. Plus, he is 29... he is getting up there in years.

Oquendo was a contender at one point and Ramirez was a decent name, not bad for "soft touches" considering what Haymon has fed his undefeated champions recently.

you're making my point for me. If it was just a minor mistake, then take the rematch with Gonzalez. When presented with this option, Mares backed away. A fighter only has so many prime years, and at 29 Mares can't afford to have a slow comeback. Conclusion: the KO loss to Gonzalez was more then just hiccup
