Will Golovkin break Bernard Hopkins middleweight title defense record?

Hopkins holds the Middleweight title defense record of 20. Currently, Golovkin is at 12. If he fights four times next year, he'll be at 16.

What's cool is that there are a lot of similarities between Hopkins middleweight reign and GGG's. Remember, for years Hopkins had just one belt, the IBF, which he defended a record 20 times. Hopkins spent years fighting all the top ten opponents, unable to secure a big fight while other title holders, who happened to be Don King fighters at the time, ducked or at least "political" reasons prevented them from fighting B-Hop (that being King). Same thing has been happening to GGG. It wasn't until the "old age" of 36 that Hopkins finally got his big shot, against hugely popular Tito Trinidad. I think Canelo will be Golovkin's Trinidad by the end of next year or early 2016, and like Hopkins with the win he'll likely unify all of the middleweight belts. History repeating itself is pretty cool to see if it happens.

Hopkins won the middleweight tournament and had every belt except wbo belt after beating Trinidad...that was his 14th title defence

But to be fair that's irrelevant if the other guys keep ducking him

I think he will break it since there's gonna be no ward fight at least soon

I don't see it man. I think GGG will lose before then. You will always find someone who has your number.

Not even comparable. B-Hop might not have been fighting big names, but he was fighting some killers in there.

Right I'm aware. I'm sseeing a future where Canelo beats Cotto for the WBC and loses it to Golovki. Which currently wwould give GGG the WBA, WBC (and IBO if you want to count that lol). Al Haymon probably gonna keep the IBF hostage for a long while. He might get the WBO sooner than later as well, depending on what happens with Korobov.

He's gotta get ahold of Cotto's belts first, but I could see that happening.

On the other hand, he's in his mid 30's already, right?

He'd better get a move on.

For the record, after the Canelo fight, if Cotto still holds the belts, he should either fight GGG or abdicate imo.

He probably should just stay at MW for a while.

Fight Cotto, Martinez, the likes if possible. The guys north at super and lhw simply wouldn't cut weight to fight him.....and I see no reason why he'd need to vacate.

it's very comparable in the sense that Hopkins was forced to fight top ten guys, with no big names, for years while he couldn't get a crack at the other champs to unify. GGG has obviously been going through the same problems (couldn't get Martinez, Sturm, Quillin, and Cotto).

5 of those fights were when Golovkin had a make believe belt like what Jesse Vargas and Daniel Jacobs have right now.

Well I'm thinking Canelo beats Cotto for his belts. Then fights GGG at some point.

He's 32. Hopkins was 36 when he finally fought Trinidad.
