I think in the past technique/fundamentals was stressed a lot more than in today's world. That goes for pretty much every sport. It seems that a lot of athletes fall in love with their athleticism rather than depending on fundamentals

The P4P List today is actually LAUGHABLE if you really examine it. P4P Fighters are suppose to the COMPLETE PACKAGE, now guys make P4P based off of POPULARITY which is LAUGHABLE!

So Old School Boxers was FAR MORE SKILLED that Today's HYPE JOBS would would be JUST ANOTHER GUY in a different ERA

I can count on 1 Hand which fighters are truly SKILLED in boxing today and lets just say....THEY'RE ALL CONSIDERED BORING but the dumb down boxing fans of today
First dude in your sig has a chin damn.

If you are a great athlete, why choose boxing where you have to toil for years before you get a big shot when you can instantly make millions playing in the nfl, nba, mlb, nascar, etc...

back then, you either played baseball or boxing. that was it.
This is a myth. It has to do with the trainers. The trainers of today aren't as good as those in the past.

trainers can only do so much...it's something within those fighters of the past that made them more talented. they just had the drive and will to win & they were psycho about it........half of them were slightly crazy.

boxing was for the poor and the worse of society.

              I agree with this.

There was a video here the other day of Golovkin doing a shift, which is a nice skill that seems to be mostly lost today. Can you imagine the level of fighters that would be turned out when nearly all of them understood what a shift was and when to use it? Plus how to feint, how to bait, how to infight, etc?

I made this post in the lounge last night..... Old school fighters get sooooo overrated it's ridiculous. I'm not trying to "underrate" them. They're great in their era. But the wannabe-boxing-historians stuck living in the past who can't accept that modern day athletes are far superior athletes, athleticism wise are completely delusional (IMO) They have it all wrong with their "Modern day fighter A would not last two fights in a boxing ring with Old School fighter who fought on black and white television B. Old School fighter B woke up at 3AM every morning to jog 55 miles with tigers in the jungle, etc etc"

The likely fact of the matter is the old school fighters would have absolutely no chance with today's athletes. lol @ anyone who thinks Wlad wouldn't be able to clinch, outbox and avoid the punches of 5'10 skinny fat-modern day Cruiserweights..... Or that Floyd Mayweather wouldn't be able to hang with Willie Pep. Just lol.

Anyway here's the post.... (I know I'll get blasted for this. And yes I am angry)

Old school players hardly get as much credit in NBA/NFL as they do in other sports.... like boxing.

Most people, even "experts," admit that the George Mikans and old NBA players wearing short shorts and converses and the NFL players in the 30s wearing punters helmets wouldn't be competitive in today's leagues...

YET, the one sport where size truly DOES matter, as does athleticism and power, etc..... you know the sport where guys take punches to the face and get KTFO'd (boxing) people loooooveeeeee to just forever overrate and nuthug the "former ATG's" and act like none of this matters. I've never seen a sport with more delusional "historians" who act like the current faster, more athletic, stronger athletes couldn't come close to beating the old timers who fought on black and white television (as if we'd know anyway)

Seriously.... Anyone saying the gigantic mountain of a man Wladimir Klitschko "has no chance" in the 70s against HW's the size of today's Cruiserweights. Or Floyd Mayweather wouldn't have a chance against Willie " I fought guys with 35 losses and was as athletic as a journeyman in today's sport" Pep.... are absolutely out of their mind.

The better question is why do people love to overrate old-school boxers and act like the athleticism of today's boxers would make no difference against those old-schoolers? Make's absolutely no sense. ESPECIALLY if you have no problem "underrating" old-school players in sports where you don't take a punch to the dome for a living

                    Partially true.

But what about the guys of the 70s/80s? Were they really that much less athletic?

Not as the guys before the 70s. Nope.

But people act like ALL of the fighters of today's era simply rely on athleticism and have no skill. Look at guys like Floyd, Rigo, Lomachenko, Crawford, Golovkin.... etc. Plenty of fighters in today's era who have ridiculous skill and athleticism.

I think the combination of skill and athleticism is simply too much for any boxer pre 1980's.

With all this said.... this is all hypothetical anyway, no one would truly know how anyone would fare against anyone. But the guys who absolutely swear that the boxer in the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s, etc... would dominate modern fighters to the point that it's ludicrous to them to even suggest anything else, are completely delusional and need to wake up. IMO.
