I'm actually just surprised you think Marg would beat Floyd.
Was it a duck? Could be. But... Floyd had already fought better fighters by then.
You pretty much misunderstood the baldomir comparison. At the end of the day, it doesnt matter if Marg is better than Baldo if Floyd is still better than both and makes them look like the slow come forward fighters with no defensive skills that they are? No one is comparing them skill for skill...just outcome. If Cotto was looking like Pernell vs Marg at times imagine an actual sturdy guy with a chin, better defensive skills and real stamina? Okay, man. Marg wasnt even the best come forward volume puncher at the time lol.. Got beaten at his own game by P Will and probably even had his wraps lol
People still hang on to the Marg myth knowing he was cheating? Or is it because they KNOW he was? Lol.
Who were these better fighters? I don't mean in a p4p sense, but h2h, doubt any of his opponents would have lasted the distance with Marg.
To put it simply, Margarito was a poor fighter. Great chin and work rate that can be successful against guys who have stamina problems or who can't box on the back foot.
He would have been boxed silly by Mayweather. Sorry, but his long, arm punches are not landing on someone like Mayweather. He just follows guys around the ring, walks in straight lines, has no head or body movement...Not even a slight chance of him winning.
It was evident as early as the Cintron fights that something was amiss. The guy cheats for the majority of his career, gets caught loading his gloves then doesn't win a single fight of note. In the process he takes a beat down from a Shane Mosley whose prime had been and gone.
The same Shane Mosley that then takes a pasting from Mayweather, but yeah, he beats Floyd!!
My Grandmother uses more angles pushing her tea trolley than Margarito did walking down an opponent. Without wraps the guy can take a beating. Well done, he must be P4P!!!
See, this is the thing... No matter how much we try to make predictions on fights involving Mayweather, the kid is so good at adapting and adjusting to his opponents' style that he probably would have found a way to beat the younger Margarito...
Especially back in the pretty boy days, when I actually enjoyed watching him fight a lot more than nowadays.
Mayb it would have looked a bit like the Corrales fight? A younger Floyd with his legs boxing side to side.
Mayweather should have fought Antonio Margarito as he was the top WW at the time that was hounding for a Floyd fight. However, Mayweather would have been properly and heavily favored in that fight and I can't see a scenario where Tony would have pulled if off unless the guy was heavily wrapped with plaster of paris. That's the thing about Margarito, we don't know how much of his success attributes to him cheating so it's hard to assess these types of fantasy matches involving him at that time.
