Comments Thread For: Don’t Blame My Age for Loss to Kovalev, Says Hopkins

Bernard Hopkins was a 49-year-old against a 31-year-old foe. This was not new to Hopkins; he’d faced and defeated many a younger foe before. And while he lost to Sergey Kovalev by shutout on Saturday night, Hopkins used his post-fight press conference to praise Kovalev’s strategy and skills, not putting forth any excuses whatsoever for the defeat..

Classy. Respect to BHOP for even taking the fight. I thought he was crazy for taking the fight in the 1st place but to go 12 rounds.

Hopkins was demolished because he trained to fight Pavlik again, not Kovalev.. the pre fight interview with Lampley is what made me scared for his life, even before the bell rang, I knew Hop was doomed because of this belief. Kovalev is not a blown up MW, hes a damn cruiserweight who just happens to campaign at 175, hes a damn tank.

In a way he has a point. Age 50 or not he's still one of the 3 best fighters in that weight class.

Hopkins has been humbled by the Krusher and has been extremely classy in defeat towards Kovalev. I believe he honestly thinks Kovalev is one of the best fighters he's ever faced which is why he's offered no excuses , lots of respect.

Also, again I'd like to say there were a lot ppeople refusing to give Hopkins any kind of credit. They said they didn't believe he'd fight Kovalev, and then once the fight got hard Hopkins would look for a way out, try to get a DQ or DQ himself, that he would clinch like crazy, he'd fight dirty, cheat, headbutt, etc. He didnt do any of that despite being dominated and hurt multiple times. Obviously his offense was extremely limited because Kovalev was too much for him to handle, but he toughed it out. Most men would have been knocked out and or quit after some of those monster shots. And in defeat hes been classy. Hopefully some of those people can now give some credit to the old man for attempting something truly great in an era where most so called champion's avoid tough fights and do not challenge themselves, more concerned with an easy payday instead of legacy.

His ****** fans will continue using that excuse, because, somehow, they know better than him.

I think we all saw the "ageless alien will outbox the eurobum" guys suddenly changing gears and deciding Hopkins should have retired 20 years ago as soon as he lost.

Hopkin is pretty sleazy leading up to fights but at least he's honest and professional when it's over.

Naw, Kovalev was too powerful and used enough smarts to not let Hopkins use his ambush style or tricks...I'm a big fan of Bernard, but fair is fair...the better man won.
