Comments Thread For: Kovalev: Hopkins is Great, But Needs To Stop Career

Sergey Kovalev unified three light-heavyweight titles when he beat Bernard Hopkins on points in Atlantic City on Saturday night. The 31-year-old Russian beat the 49-year-old American 120-107 on two cards and 120-106 on the third and added Hopkins’s WBA and IBF belts to his WBO title.

Hopkins did put up a remarkable performance – for a man who will be 50 years old on January 15. But he was beaten round after round and left the ring with only memories of the good old times.

Legendary career, already holds all the records for oldest champ, no need to prove anything else after 50.

I predicted a kovalev KO/TKO. man BHOP might really be an alien. While guys dropping in the 1st 3 rounds against kovalev, he took bombs in the 12th round and finished the fight.

But he needs to retire. I was scared for him the whole fight.

Said it since the Dawson quit saga.

There's no point in fighting on.

Unless he fights Cloud's and Murat's of the world.

you gotta smother the Russian, mix it up with inside fighting and a little movement. sergey seemed comfortable in there all night and was never out of his rhythm. was surprised to see Hopkins not try to clinch in excess. only one who can challenge these powerhouses in ggg and sergey kovalev right now is andre sog ward. Tonight was a great win for kovalev and he impressed me but he still did not do what nobody has done before and that is to stop Bernard Hopkins. still would not bet on ward but am sure he will have a harder time with sergey than ggg.

Hopkins hasn't been able to execute the tie up game plan all that well since moving up in weight. Even the skinny Calzaghe looked stronger than B Hops on the inside. Kovalev popped Hopkins to the side of the head nearly every time he went for a hug.

That's easier said than done. "To smother him". How many fighters can with withstand his hand speed and power? Plus he has a really nice jab. Trying to smother him is probably good a gameplan, but I don't see how anyone in that weight class can stand up to his power and do it.

Hopkins was frightened when he got hit and he realized that trying to get close to him would be very difficult.
