    Cotto vs Taylor: MW Unification...whynot?

So, Jermaine Taylor has made himself sort of relevant again picking up a win and an IBF title. For Miguel Cotto's next fight, most likely in January or February, as a stay-busy defense/unification, why not fight against Jermaine Taylor?

He may be past his prime, but it'd still be a decent fight against a true MW as he prepares for a big-time clash against Canelo and/or hopefully GGG?

    Thoughts?

cotto is the lineal MW champion. you can trace that belt back through hopkins, hagler, monzon, robinson, greb.

let's not make a mockery of it.

I can actually see this fight being made. It's not very dangerous for cotto, Taylor is practically brain dead and packs crystal

If you're going to unify might as well do it against the better opponent who also happens to make the most financial sense.

It's all but certain that Cotto will fight early 2015 - if not a "named" opponent like Taylor, who then?

The Cotto/Canelo fight happens in either May or June. If he fights Mayweather its in May.

I want to see Cotto/GGG, but I doubt Cotto fights him, in what is surely a swan song fight before he secures a Canelo or Mayweather fight.

I could understand that it might be a "stoopid" fight, but other than those three, who else would you like to see in what would be a HBO WCB fight...that is realistic? Kirkland @154, knowing how unreliable he is; Bundrage @ 154, which is worse than Taylor?

Peter Quillin, although everyone hates him and he's a Showtime guy only? Murray who can't fight in USA? Maybe a Trout rematch?

It's easy to just ramble that everything is a sh#t fight, but any substance or alternatives? At least Cotto vs Taylor is a champ vs champ fight, non-PPV. But hey, if you have better ideas

Why not do a Trout rematch? I mean Taylor is not a champ he's simply a belt holder. At least against Trout it will serve as a barometer as to how much better Cotto really is under Roach. It will also be non-ppv and presumably easy to negotiate.
