Yeah I know "technically" he beat knee surgery Martinez and out of the ring he rates high on technicality... But not a living soul honestly considers Cotto a top middleweight.

Drunkard Pavlik could come out of retirement and beat him to death.
So you are saying that an inactive Pavlik could beat Cotto but a less inactive boxer in Martinez who beat Pavlik at his prime could not beat Cotto.

Trout destroyed Cotto?? I saw Trout beating Cotto but not destroying him.
I saw Lara beating Canelo but I wouldnt say Lara destroyed Canelo.

GGG would destroy anyone he doesn't fight. Just like Martinez was going to retire Cotto.

Now, think about it for a second, if Cotto were to pull the victory over GGG...what will BS haters will say? "GGG was green", "he was overated", "GGG was a hypejob", etc. Just like it happens each and every time Cotto beats someone.

No credit will be given. After Canelo and/or GGG.
Why do you assume we wouldn't give Cotto credit? Pretty sure most sensible people gave Cotto credit for beating broken Martinez.

Martinez wasn't "inactive", he was medically disabled.

Here's a good critique that spells it out - http://www.arcaneknowledge.org/sports/linealprob.htm
You still have to fight the fights to become a champion. There's no other sport where you can proclaim someone the legitimate champion just because you think he's very good without first winning whatever matches. While Golovkin's competition has been better than the competition of most middleweights, it still wasn't better than who Martinez was fighting when he was champion. And Cotto just barely beat Martinez recently, who was still seen as better than anyone Golovkin has fought. So it seems unfair to strip Cotto of his championship status and proclaim GGG so soon.

It's still perfectly fair to say that GGG is the best middleweight though. Unlike other sports, the best don't always face off against the best so educated guesses is sometimes the best we have to work with to decide who's the best.

Whatever you think, "Championships" should not be something that should be based solely on educated guesses though. Until Golovkin does something better than win over Martinez or until we see the type of competition Cotto winds up facing, I think it would be disservice to call Golovkin THE legimate champion. Although, it's perfectly fair to call him the best like I do.

This was one of the reasons why I thought Ring's new policy of filling out championship vacancies just for the sake of filling them out by letting #3 and #4 contenders fight for championships was a bad move. You need to earn champions by actually fighting the best contender, not the 4th best like Golovkin has.

Technically he was medically clear to fight. So we have a surgeon and a doctor that cleared him to fight but we are going to take your word for it.

I agree with you but that's not the essence of the argument being made in that piece. What they're saying is that the lineage is not beyond reproach.

Well, Ring mag has rules to prevent the stuff mentioned in that article. While ring champ and lineal champ isn't strictly the same thing, it's usually treated as such. tbrb also has rules to prevent that stuff.
