Yea sure. His legs were "shot" enough to try this later on in the fight:

Lots of haters here. Cotto gets no props whatsoever, even though these same haters said a 50% martinez would be too much for him. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

            I agree 100%.

Yeah, and Sam Soliman was bouncing and running around late in the Taylor fight. He must have been in perfect health!

soliman? what a horrible comparison. Martinez's legs were completely fine, as you can see:

He got caught cold and never recovered. He said so himself and its time for ya to accept and move on.

Yeah I know "technically" he beat knee surgery Martinez and out of the ring he rates high on technicality... But not a living soul honestly considers Cotto a top middleweight.

Drunkard Pavlik could come out of retirement and beat him to death.
                  Imagine that

Kelly Pavlik two-time lineal middleweight champion. He'd have a Jack Daniels endorsement for life.

I think some people need to realise that the lineal championship is not foolproof, and is as vulnerable to farce as the Alphabet title system.

Here's a good critique that spells it out - http://www.arcaneknowledge.org/sports/linealprob.htm

There are some situations where it would be legitimate to strip a champion***8212;even a lineal champion***8212;of his title. For example, the champion could refuse to face any quality competition, prolonging his reign by fighting strictly mediocre opponents, or perhaps not fighting at all, while refusing to officially retire.

Meanwhile, another fighter might defeat some top contenders, in which case he may deserve to be recognized as the real champion, since the paper champion is no longer actively fighting top contenders.

A title that is not defended against legitimate contenders may be considered effectively vacant, so the vacancy is filled in the usual way, with a bout between two top contenders. Now, this kind of judgment requires us to make subjective assessments about who is a top contender, but the same problem would arise even in strictly lineal championships whenever a vacancy occurs.

There is no getting around the fact that champions are not always crowned by mechanical rules of genealogy, but we sometimes have to make judgments about who is a top contender.
