Now guys like Chavez put on 20 or more pounds and hurt their health and their performance. You have guys fighting two weight classes below their natural fighting weight and they almost have to because the other fighters are doing it. Mayweather and Pacquiao are two of the only fighters who don't weigh much more on fight night than they do at the weigh in.
Unintended consequences. At the time the risk of brain damage due to dehydration was the priority.

I get what that, but now you risk brain damage getting hit by a guy two divisions above you i.e. Gatti vs Gamache

The dehydration is dangerous too, maybe they could have a series of weigh in's where a fighter has to be on target over the course of a few?

I remember being surprised at how much Vasquez rehydrated against Bey. Jonathan Romero looked pretty big at 122lb. Mathebula is massive at 122lb.

Brandon rios fought at 135 and walks around at 180
Chris Algieri is 6 foot and walks around at 170 fights at 140
Julio Cesar Chavez jr is 6 foot 2 fights at 160's and walks around as high as 230
Canelo is short and stocky and cuts a lot of weight, he look dead at the Floyd weigh in.

there are too many fighters way too big for their own weight class to name.
But I say who cares. If they can make the weight let them fight in what ever division they want. In fact squeezing down to a weight you don't belong in hurts you way more. You're trainings are more about weight cutting than actual boxing. Mayweather Sr. Used to say this about Hatton. He would spend too much time focused on the weight and not the boxing.

Ike Quartey, Vernon Forrest, Corrales. I lot of fighters that when young can drain themselves to make weight safely. As they age that ability is diminished
