The thing I hate is how people act like they know who Ricardo Torres was. This is a guy who 99% of this board had NO IDEA about, he came out and gave a great performance that night, but was stopped by a better man in Cotto. After that he was just a bum who fought nobodies in Colombia. The kid had a disgusting KO rate and SHOWED to have quick hands and explosive power in that fight. I think he's better than people think.

The thing that worries me about Cotto is that he looks like he's slowing down trying to make 140. In his fights against Sosa, Maussa, Jukko he looked quick and fluid with all of his movements.

I think that a move to 147 will help him get back some of that quickness and he'll have a lot of success at that weight.
Yeah, he's definately a little big for Jr. Welter. He will evuentally have no choice but to move up to 147, cause he's still young and making that wt. in the next few yr's wont be easy at all. There really are a few good matchup's in welter for him when he gets there, although alot of the 'money' names are at 140.

To top it off, he's being protected to the ultimate degree (Branco and even Malignaggi who I have winning---these two fighters have done nothing really).

This was a great article with many truths.
Tito was being dropped by the Anthony Stephens and Alberto Cortez' of the boxing world in his 26 fights...so what's your point?

The similarity is...both champions RECOVERED and brutally dispatched their opponents soon after their minor meltdowns.

Just so you know, Corley also rocked FLOYD PRETTY BOY MAYWEATHER, and Torres will soon fight Lazcano, and probably knock him out.

The fact is, getting rocked means little if you come back to Knockout your opponent.

He has given brutal, brutal beatings to Maussa, Ceballos, Jukko, Abdulaev, Bailey, Corley, Pinto, Branco, and Sosa. Many of the fighters that he has faced, have never been KOed, or stopped, until they fought him. Hell he has faced the same fighters that beat him in the amatuers and has stopped them.

Emmanuel Steward said it best- "Cotto has the best 25(now 26) fight record in boxing."

I may be wrong. But if you look at it at the point of logic, you're also not exactly right.

Cotto's division is ripe with top competition. I'm not impressed with an undefeated record. What impresses me are wins against elites. It's been years since Cotto has yet to step up.

There's Hatton, Margarito, PBF. Man! When will he ever fight them.

Although I think we can both postpone both out judgements on Cotto as either a fake or an elite. DO we agree that Cotto needs to step up soon and prove his worth.

Do we agree that Cotto's status whether he is elite or a fake will depend upon whether he comes out on top against elites?

Can we agree on those points macho?
I will answer your question even though you did not answer mine.

IMO, Cotto has 26 fights, he is 25 years old. He is progressing very well. He is being managed carefully and smartly. You really think that it is smart to put in a fairly green fighter with someone like PBF? PBF said it himself, "Cotto is a very skilled and powerful boxer, but he is too green for me, he needs another 2 years." Cotto's management has said that they are willing to have a Cotto/Castillo match up, but that cannot happen until after Castillo/Corrales III. I heard that If Lazcano beats Torres, COtto will probably fight Lazcano. He is a young, learning fighter that is being exposed to many different styles. A Gatti/Cotto fight is also being talked about.

cotto's TKO win over corley was rather questionable. the last barrage that he landed didnt really land per se. they missed and knicked corley and chop chop took a knee and the ref stepped in and waved the fight over, much to the dismay of corley's corner. corley probly wouldve been TKOd anyway, judging from the amount of punishment that cotto kept inflicting on him. but that was a controversial stoppage IMO.

in the 3rd round, corley landed a perfect punch to the side of cotto's head and cotto was all but unconscious for the majority of that round. but he hung in there, showed a lot of heart, and rallied back to TKO corley. some might argue that it was a perfect punch that staggered cotto, not corley's power. i agree with this, but my next point will futher explain cotto's reason for staggering.

in the war cotto had with torres, torres landed a fair share of solid punches that rocked cotto on many occasions. most were opposite of the corley punches that rocked miguel, they werent perfect, they were powerful. in the 2nd, torres hurt cotto enough so that only the slightest amount of force wouldve sent cotto to the canvas. cotto wobbled, and torres "shoved" cotto to the mat, inflicting the 1st KD of cotto's career. cotto was on his way down, its just that torres' shove sent him in that particular direction. that 2nd round KD was legit, IMO.

the punches that rocked cotto were caused by three things: timing, power, and cotto's chin. timing is what staggered cotto in the corley fight. power staggered cotto in the torres fight. and cotto's chin only made staggering him that much easier. cotto's heart, however, compensates for his less than sturdy chin. his determination is what saw him thru the torres fight and the 3rd round with corley. like diego corrales, hes got a less than solid chin, but a huge amount of heart.

Can you tell me what's the Gatti-Branco excuse??? The only one I see here making excuses is you.

Some fighters after getting rocked once tend to lose confidence, not cotto, he will collect himself and eventually KO your ass.

That's right buddy I believe you are right. Cotto has only 20 some fights and still undefeated. He is getting rocked alright but he always finds a way to get the victory. And with every hard battle he goes through, he gets the experience.
