The Cotto fight was the only fight where he tried for 9 rounds, and then decided he better not try to win.

He pretty much finds a way to lose any fight that means he could make it to the next level. It's a real talent tbh. This does nothing for Canelo heading into a potential may ppv showdown so it's quite mind boggling.

Exactly! It's a crappy build-up to a PPV bout, and a poor return to HBO fight for Alvarez. If Clottey went into a shell after feeling Pacquiao's power, what's he going to do after he feels Canelo's?

i get the whole idea, canelo beats guy cotto struggled with...YEARS AGO. Thing is, it seems a bit linear. Clottey is not easy to look good against. His problem has never been he couldnt box. hes a very good fighter. His issue is he seems to get disinterested in winning fights. So Clottey is a very high risk fight, he has zero reward. Casuals dont know him much, hardcores really dont like him just seems like a recipe for derailing a potential ppv. The one thing that might happen is clottey shells up all fight a la the manny fight. even that doesnt get anyone excited for a future ppv for canelo, esp after his lackluster ppv against lara.

That seems very clear to me. Boxing has operated this way for many years. This fight makes perfect sense.

And considering Alvarez's 4 fight run before now, I don't mind this ahead of Cotto.
