It's simply that Mercer hit hard and had a very strong chin.

Foreman almost lost to Lyle, a poor mans Mercer!
Lyle is mercer with more power but less chin... Their careers are very similar

Lyle is not more powerful than Mercer. He hit hard but not harder.

What have you based that on?

I know there are similarities that's why I compared.

Never thought of Ray as being a huge puncher,, he was a clubber that would wear guys down, I just don't consider him a huge one punch puncher.. Lyle I always remember as the guy that matched foreman with power shots, and Foreman had a great chin and was dropped by lyles

Lyle and Foreman 1 competed against much weaker opponents though than did Mercer who'se opponents durablilty were of a completely different nature.

Foreman did have a good chin but being dropped by Lyle shows that his chin was not indestructible, not that Lyle's punch was off the charts.

If you think Mercer's shots were clubbing, check out Lyle's shots in Foreman vs Lyle itself. So slow and clubbing it's a miracle they even landed on Foreman anyway!

Maybe your right,, I just feel that lyles whole game was basically power punching, and mercer was relentless pressure and chin..

They are heavys so obviously both can **** hard, I just don't think of mercer being a better one punch guy..

I don't think Mercer is the hardest puncher or anything either, just hard enough to KO someone if he managed to hit the average HW with decent chin if he hit them flush which was not often.

I agree than Lyle and Mercer are somewhat comparable.

Both guys were in the deepest eras, and both gave good accounts of themselves vs the elites, but somehow never hit it big, and too inconsistent, especially mercer.. No way he should have lost to the likes of fergueson and ancient Holmes

Yeah inconsistent. He should not have lost to Ferguson at all. He clearly underestimated Holmes, a mistake. He was never a slick fighter though Mercer.

How he pulled such a performance against LEnnox IDK.

As your aware I don't rate the 70's era at all but I'll spare you that stuff just to share mutually that I respect Lyle as one of that eras best HW's overall, despite never claiming a title.

I think Lyle would have beaten Frazier by KO, even though he couldn't find Quarry. Styles make fights in that triangle.

If that's your criteria, then you must surely understand how flawed that is
