Comments Thread For: De La Hoya: Schaefer Legal Rift is Going To Be a Fight

MGM Grand, Las Vegas - Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya was very calm as he discussed the ongoing legal battle with his former CEO, Richard Schaefer. In early June, Schaefer parted ways with Golden Boy after working with the company since their formation.

At the end of June, Golden Boy filed a reported $50 million dollar arbitration claim against Schaefer. To date, the actual claims against Schaefer have not been specified.

While Schaefer contends that he's a free agent, De La Hoya is very firm on his position that Schaefer is bound to a no-compete clause - which De La Hoya says will expire in March of 2018.

when did he say he didn't?

"After more than 10 years with Golden Boy, it is time to move on to the next chapter of my career," Schaefer said in a statement. "This decision has required a great deal of personal reflection, but ultimately I concluded that I have no choice but to leave. I have succeeded in banking and I have succeeded in boxing, and I look forward to the next opportunity.

Richard Schaefer, the former Swiss banker who co-founded Golden Boy Promotions with close friend Oscar De La Hoya in 2002 and has served as its only chief executive, resigned on Monday.

Man how many times do they have to say this? They've been saying this since time immemorial. What exactly is Haymon waiting for?

Money Mayweather according for Forbes is a multi millionaire. He and Haymon could compete full blast with GBP and TR easily. What's the hold up?

In many industries there is a contract that prevents a "Key" employee from deciding to simply leave with the list of clients. In essence the list becomes protected property.

Oscar is saying that the act of "leaving" as you put it, is akin to taking proprietary Golden Boy material and benefitting from it by having used Golden Boy to develop the list, then turning the list over to another, or using the list oneself....the list in this case is the fighters.

This is a very simple case. The judge has to decide if the fighters in question were a conspiracy where Al and Richard used Golden Boy and her property or, whether there was no special interest in these fighters as proprietary property for Golden Boy.

I don't know the resalution but this is eaaaaaaasy work for a judge knowledgable about property laws and contracts.

De La Hoya filed the arbitration claim in June. The hearing should have taken place and it should have been resolved by now. There is obviously more to this situation than Oscar is telling. As far as the non-compete contract, it is not worth the paper it is printed on. You cannot legally prevent a person from earning a living in their chosen career
