I suspect he will fight in Jan/Feb. There will still be three months for a May fight. So he passed on split training with pac and training in a place he didn't want to. He learned his lesson from trout with half assed training. I will be disappointed if he doesn't fight before may. Long layoff are not going to be good if he ends up in the ring with mayweather/GGG/Canelo.
You hit the nail right on the head. Now the next logical choice is to vacate the 160 belt. He was ordered by thw wbc to fight the winner of ggg rubio or vacate and fight canelo.

I'm not liking this, u know why? because if Canelo vs Cotto happens on May 2015, then Miguel would be taking almost a year of inactivity, say what you want but unless you Floyd Mayweather inactivity is gonna pay you back hard time.

Canelo is gonna be fresh, conditioned and focus, that of course if.........................Cotto's intentions are going after Canelo, I suspect there's something else, Mayweather vs Cotto II could happen.

This is exactly what I thought when I read this.

He seems frightened of losing out on that payday, and it's probably because him and his camp know that they caught Sergio at the right time and they don't feel as confident going up against the other middleweights, especially since Cotto is kind of small for that weight class.

Why not face Andy Lee in December? It's not like Lee is an elite opponent, he's got a decent audience, he can punch, but he's very beatable.

I guess it wouldn't really matter if they fought him in January, but if they're angling towards that superfight with Canelo it would have to be very early in 2015. Fighting sometime in March won't cut it.

he said early 2015, match is definitely going down in May. So Cotto might have a tune-up fight on regular show Early January

                  Canelo/TBA Dec 6 or 13
Timothy Bradley Dec 6 or 13

Also Ruslan and Andrade still coming back with a possible Rios
Ward being gone should've freed up some money, but most likely going to Canelo in a last minute move

plus they've been shrinking their budget recently.

If Cotto/Canelo did fight, it would be PPV
that's why he said early 2015, it could be january or february

I think they'd do it for Jan though so Cotto can have maximum rest time, ample training time and time to promote the fight.... 4 months away, but this is a big fight not concerning Manny or Floyd

Cotto's comeback ever since losing to Trout has been about picking the right fights (Delvin Rodriguez and injured Sergio Martinez). For December there are no safe ppv opponents that he could get away with. Supposed MW champ and he's got names like Tim Bradely, Juan Marquez, and Brandon Rios floating around.
