Right, it makes absolutely no sense based on their prior rules. However, and I doubt this would happen, i would make perfect sense for this to be a regular occurance becausethat would be the only way to force unification bouts (by picking up an interim belt) since there is currently no way to make two different belt holders fight if they don't want to. Thats why we had embarrassing stuff like Ottke and Calzaghe both having 21 title defenses in the same weight class simultaneously lol

This ^. Could be the WBC, IBF and WBA negotiations from a coupla months ago over unifications have/are resulting in some policy changes.

Cotto will get just as big of a payday against GGG then with Canelo. The only difference would be is Cotto would get 4/5ths of the smaller pie instead of half of a larger one.
