He chose to fightagains Trout, Lara and May and from these maybe just the last one was wanted by his team too, the other 2 were typical high risk low reward fights, but he fought them. So no, he is clearly not protected now. You can say that why is he still fighting in 154 when he can't make the weight, because if you really want to hate someone this kind of BS reason is enough, but hey, he wanted to prove thathe is the best at 154 and Lara accepted the terms, didn't he? By the rules his belt is still him. And at 155 which is 1pound bigger than 154 he beat Lara, not convincingly (btw hard to look good against a Lara type of fighter) but on a tight fight IMO he deserved it. So what's the problem now? I don't know why he said that he won't go up to 160 and he stays at 154 but I think just a few months and he will finally change his mind about this.

    lol.........

refusing to be a middleweight, and fight middleweights, when you are a middleweight, is not BS.

    alvarez is a middleweight.

he will get this title off of a small junior middleweight.

Unless cotto is going for that Mexican money, but he's good on money, and the fights huge enough as is.
Agreed! Cotto's the A side with plenty of options. What happens is up to him.
      WAR COTTO!!!

He is a middleweight, exactly!! But what does he do say he beats cotto? Vacate the title and clearly be seen as ducking GGG and go back to fighting JMW in the middleweight division or, fight GGG and have his soul taken and never be the same. Either way the move to middleweight is gonna fu@k him and expose him bad.

canelo brings a hell of a lot more [gate in vegas, and ppv buys,] to the table than cotto.

alvarez' fight with mayweather did 50% more in total ppv revenue than cotto - mayweather. it sold 700K more ppv.

Mainly because many bought into the whole 'will outweigh mayweather by 25 lbs' drama. I think thats the only time canelo has outperformed cotto as far as that goes, no?

But yeah, canelo is a huge draw. I don't think canelo has overtaken cotto as the third biggest draw, but this fight could do it. Ultimately tho, cottos a gigantic draw himself, as well as being the champion and legend. In other words, Cotto has options, there'll be no strongarming him into a fight.

that's because the hype of an undefeated fighter and look how boring it was cotto maywether was more exciting to watch and lets not forget canelo had help with the Garcia lucas fight so lets not act like Floyd and canelo brought that in by themselves cotto is the A side and will beat canelo who cant even defend against a jab

canelo did as much or around as much to fight angulo [both guys coming off of losses,] as cotto did to fight martinez, the middleweight champion of the world.

                he's a much bigger draw.

I'm just interested to see who Cotto's December opponent will be. Freddie Roach has been saying Golovkin's not a big enough star, so who's he going to get that is a bigger star than Golovkin at middle or junior middle?

I'm a big Cotto fan, but if he stays at middleweight and never fights Golovkin, that's just straight up ducking.

OK, he's a bigger draw. Cotto is a good draw himself, is good on money and can make it elsewhere. Not to mention Cotto is the champion. I have a hard time believing canelo will be able to demand anything from Cotto (that isn't insignificant). But as far as date or venue, that's cottos choice. He doesn't need anything from canelo.
