Fans don't have to pay for fights like this if they don't want to, and that's the fundamental flaw to your argument. I didn't watch this fight, and I'm not upset about it either. If a garbage card is put on, and you tune in/buy tickets, you're telling the promoter that it's OK to continue to do so. The most damage you can do to them to send a message is taking their money by not supporting it. After all of the years boxing has been alive, complaining has done nothing, and as such, I don't resort to it. I'm not "glossing over" corruption, I just don't get bent out of shape about it, because it's not gonna change anything if people continue to keep it alive.
As far as your question, mismatches have always been a part of boxing. Singling out the type of mismatch it was doesn't make it any more or less so. To actually answer the question though, Duran-Benitez was a mismatch. Though Benitez never challenged him directly, it still should have never happened.
