If you want to see Golovkin become THE champion because he's the best of the division, then that's fair enough. Does that mean he should fight Cotto? Fuck no. Competitive fights should come first over the imaginary lineal title that Cotto may or may not have. (*cough* Sergey Khomitsky *cough*) The mandate should be to have Cotto announce his permanent move back down to 154. That's it. Period. The lineal title does justify a career ending mismatch because Cotto quite clearly does not belong at 160. People who want the Cotto-GGG fight to happen because they want GGG to become a star are using some ridiculous logic for a fight fan. Did you become a boxing fan to see great fights, or to live vicariously through your favorite fighter?

The reasoning for the lineal champion to fight the #1 contender is usually because this tends to produce the best competitive fights. This obviously does not apply to Golovkin-Cotto.

Would rather pay $$ for GGG vs Froch/Ward instead.

It kind of shows the sad state of boxing when people legitimately ask "should the #1 middleweight fight the #2 middleweight?"

Yes. Absolutely. Put it at MSG in front of all of Cotto's adoring fans.

And Plus, Canelo got a Gift. He did not look like someone who earned a shot at the title.

That would be a hell of a fight. I would try to get it to 156lbs if I'm Cotto but I'd settle for 157lbs but that's it. Cotto vs. Golovkin a week and a half before Christmas on HBO PPV at MSG, that would be a hell of an event. I have Golovkin by KO before the 9th Round.
