Man, I would hate to see Martinez start losing to lesser fighters as a result of this decision. There's no shame in getting wrecked by a legend like Cotto, but anyone less than that would be so sad and annoying.

It's his choice, but no Martinez supporter wants to see him become a shopworn 'opponent' for guys like Murray, Quillin, Soliman, etc. Imagine them saying "Yee-yuh, I dun beat Martinez yo! I'm the best!"

Well first off, I'm no Cotto fan - never was, never will be. Secondly, I stand by my original point in saying that any subsequent Martinez opponents will be getting the leftovers of Chavez Jr. in round 12/Murray/Cotto. The credit just gets lower and lower. How can it not?

The reason I consider it a great feat is more down to Cotto himself, rather than how shot Martinez turned out to be. Cotto (a natural WW) came in refreshed from his losses in 2012, as the underdog, with everyone saying "Ohh he's too small and even a Martinez at 70% will destroy him".

Granted, he wrecked a Martinez with shot legs, but he did it in a visually spectacular fashion on a prominent stage (his backyard). Anyone who does the same to Martinez now won't have all those attributes to boast about, even if they blast him out in round 1 at Cowboys Stadium.

That already started when he lost to Murray and Cotto.

Martinez is finished. Even if they allowed him to come in at his natural weight, I don't think he could compete against the top dogs at 147 now.

I know he wants more money (we all do), but he has to realise that from now on he will only get it at the expense of his pride.

A knee can be healthy but that doesn't mean it's the same as it was 5 yrs ago. Michael Jordan was healthy when he played basketball at the age of 40 however it wasn't possible for him to do high-flying dunks. I'm ok with Sergio returning as long as he slowly works his way towards his goal. But he has to realize his body has changed and if he gets beaten again he truly needs to retire. Or he can hang around like Roy and slowly begin to damage his legacy by getting into embarrassing beatdowns.
