Comments Thread For: Abner Mares Wants One More, Then Jhonny Gonzalez

Former three division world champion Abner Mares (27-1-1, 14KOs) returned with a battling victory over Puerto Rican tough nut Jonathan Oquendo. Mares won unanimously on points over ten rounds at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas last weekend. Mares says he needs one more bout, before wading into a rematch with WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez.

In a WBC conference call, Abner told reporters that this was an important and testing fight, because it gave him the much needed opportunity to shed accumulated ring rust. It took him three to four rounds to re-adjust his timing and reflexes, against a tough, competitive and very determined opponent. [Click Here To Read More]

Take your time and bounce back comfortably, Champ. Just don't wait too long or your detractors will say you waited for him to get old. I think Abner wins the rematch. He doesn't have a history of being vulnerable to left hooks. This is boxing and sometimes you get caught with a shot. I still think Abner is the truth.

Mares got cut during the 4th round and once the 5th rolled around he stepped up. Instead of showing fear of tanking punches or shy of throwing he began to un role his game plan. Clinch to set up shots on the inside and outbox from a distance. It wasn't an appealing fight on his behalf but he was off for 11 months and suffered a brutal 1st loss KO. He seems to be confused on his style and before taking Jhonny on again he needs to re establish himself. He can't go in doubting himself against Gonzalez or else his career will be taking another hit.

Truth is there wasn't much improvement shown aside from those Virgil trademark hugs. However that fight was to shake off the dust, this next one he really needs to show depth to his strategies. He still leaves himself wide open when leading in to attack the body by throwing those wide hooks you can see coming from a mile away. He was always able to box but had to convert to a brawler to overcome Anselmo Moreno and seemed to have gotten stuck on that style. I am rooting for Abner to take back his career soon although Jhonny has always been one of my personal favourites, I want Abner to overcome him since Gonzalez is on his way out.

You have too many points and I will only place wagers that high on Floyd and Andre, but I got 10 Bil on Mares in a rematch.

Mares is shook there is no question about it. Not one, but two fights before Gonzalez breaks him again and derails his career. Mares ******** is vice tight right now.

It wasn't just a typical left hook either. Gonzalez disguised it well. And it wasn't just that, Mares shouldve clinched instead of fighting back.

The rematch will be about who lands first. Gonzalez's chin isn't all that great.
