The rematch will be about who lands first. Gonzalez's chin isn't all that great.
That feint to the body and then shifting it up stairs was perfect. A true beauty of a punch and set up. Johnny can crack but power and skill can only protect his chin for so long. If only he had a chin he would have been unstoppable throughout his career... Sadly you can't have it all sometimes.

That really was what held him back from having a great career.

I'm pulling for Mares and interpreting his latest performance as ring rust and the fact he's trying to find his style on top of working with a new trainer. He's doing the smart thing in not rushing anything otherwise it could severely derail his career.

You can't really knock him for it either they guy has proven himself throughout his career.

Right! There are some who theorize that Gonzo is all wrong for Abner and that this is somehow a mismatch. I fundamentally disagree.

These are usually the hardest types of losses to avenge. Getting blasted out in the first round KTFO. The memory of that night will likely continue to haunt Mares. How will he harness it? Will he be successful as Lewis was in the Rahman rematch? Or will he be able to be mentally tough enough to overcome this huge hurdle in his life? Will he fold like a lawn chair? Mental toughness will be key. Abner should study Jhonny but don't look at this as pt 2. He should view the rematch as a whole new fight.

no it's not,but mares is very small for 126,plus he's never really been a big puncher, maybe at 118 but now at featherweight no,he's more of a volume puncher that maybe wears you down, but he's very small for a featherweight and because of that I don't see him hurting Gonzalez at all,i think Gonzalez beats him again and it will be because of the weight, gonzalez is pretty good but like you said it's his chin that's not that great but I don't see a fighter like abner taking advantage of that,a natural 126 pounder whos strong yes,but not abner

Mares took some big shots from Ponce and he was hurt a few times but nothing of big signifance. I think the reason why Gonzalez's punch did the damage it did was cause of the set up.

I agree about Gonzalez tho. And I think his chin has been a bit more sturdy at FW?

Is sad that a guy like Mares can't get most people's respect around here.

He is small at 126 but remember he was able to do something to Ponce that Gonzalez couldn't do. In other words, he still must have respectable power at 126.

Just like when Marquez knocked down Pacquiao in the 4th fight. Gonzalez with the left, Marquez with the right, . War Mares though!

Mares should revert back to his old form against Jhonny Gonzalez if the two were to ever rematch again and that is by mauling, brawling and swarming his man on the inside; Because if he chooses to back up and fight off the back foot, in an attempt to circle and out box the longer man from the outside, the greater his chances of getting caught in an exchange from a long range punch that he doesn't see. As was the case in their first fight. Abner is the naturally shorter man and needs to smother his much taller opponent on the inside in order to neutralize his power.

I agree. And you're right. The mental aspect will be hard to overcome IMO. Will he be able to? Let's hope so.
