  • Comments Thread For: Espinoza Explains Showtime's Position on PPV Numbers

Fans looking forward to sifting through future pay-per-view numbers after a big fight as a way to rate the success of a promotion shouldn’t rely on Showtime to provide those figures going forward.

Showtime boxing head Stephen Espinoza told BoxingScene.com on Monday the network plans on withholding upcoming PPV numbers to avoid the type of controversy that engulfed Floyd Mayweather’s last bout with Marcos Maidana on May 3 when the topic of PPV buys seemed to overwhelm the actual bout itself, he said. The numbers will only be released if the event sets a PPV record, he said.

oh, so you don't want to release numbers anymore?
OKay....that's telling. I guess every fight from here on out will do 2.4 million

HBO might want to do the same thing for the upcoming Pac vs Algieri card.

I'm sure there will still be a way to get these numbers from Showtime's annual reports.

Stephen, thank your boy Floyd for this obsession with ppv #'s. Dont blame the fans.

Espinoza and Arum are really ****ing annoying. Can we just get some mobsters to kill these 2 so the mafia can take boxing back over. If not, the politicians will take over and then it will be 100 times worse than it is now.

Basically what he's saying, is our numbers are down and we don't want to share them with you because it's embarrassing.

That's silly. Fans obsession with ppv numbers have little to do with Floyd and everything to do with the he stated of the boxing business. Is this a good thing? Who knows but this probably wasn't Esoinozas decision. Something like this comes from much higher up.

I don't care about PPV numbers. I get why some do, and why they became a big part of debates regarding how the revenue from a possible Floyd-Pac should be divided. But now that fight is a never was, I don't see it as important whether a particular fight does over a certain amount. Floyd, Pac, Cotto and Canelo are going to have all their fights on PPV until they next lose, and probably even after that.

Having said that, this move seems childish at best. Refusing to disclose PPV numbers because people talk about them too much? Come on now. They are still going to be talked about, if anything this will just make people more curious to find out and it's not as if they can keep them a secret from every journalist with a twitter account.

                  Who cares about PPV numbers

How about an explanation as to why your customers who are paying ($15?) a month are getting back to back to back showcase cards

You're putting on cards for paying customers in which one opponent is supposed to win and the other one have no chance.

I hope you fail miserably and get fired very soon.

Gotham City needed a Batman. Boxing needs a Frankie Carbo to save it again.
