Comments Thread For: Espinoza: Mayweather-Maidana Profitable, Part 2 Worthy

Contrary to widespread industry rumors, Showtime Sports head Stephen Espinoza, the May 3rd bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marcos Maidana was not a financial failure for his network.

Espinoza, while not disclosing the exact details regarding the pay-per-view numbers and the profits, rejects any claims that a bundle of money was lost on the show. According to industry sources, the PPV generated between 830-900,000 pay-per-view purchases. The show sold 15,718 tickets for a live gate of $15,024,400.

All the haters and dimwits will fill this message board with comments saying that Espinoza is lying and the PPV lost money. They would rather believe the word of a lazy blogger than an executive who knows the truth. I predict there will be at least 200 comments calling Espinoza a liar.

"If it wasn't profitable then we wouldn't be going into direct rematch 4 months later". Espinoza trying to imply he actually has a say in who Floyd is going to fight. Look, Marcos did better than everyone thought and it wasn't a snoozer but the last half of the fight was one-sided and there's no need to see it again. Catching the Showtime replay this time around.

Now here comes the BS. "Oh, he's lying to protect Floyd." "Showtime is losing money." "Haymon is the devil." But what they can't explain is, even with less than 1 million PPVs, Mayweather vs. Maidana I is still the highest PPV event of 2014 thus far, and the only fight capable of beating that is Canelo vs. Lara. Cotto vs. Martinez was a flop, and Pacquiao vs. Algeri will most definitely be a flop. Two years, Forbes highest paid athlete on the planet earth. Men lie, Women lie...numbers never lie.

Only haters, Mannytards and Khantards cared about the numbers, the fight was great and competitive, the rematch will sell like hot cakes, it's good for boxing.

Meanwhile somwhere in China, at an untelevised event outside behind a building with some dumsters behind it, Manny will go life and death with club fighter Algieri.

If it wasn't a financial success, then there is no way that we would be going into a direct rematch four months later
That doesn't really prove anything. It could simply mean that Maidana rematch would be the least unprofitable out of all the available options while being stuck with the Mayweather contract. Not saying there was no profit for sure, but the other options would do worse than Maidana I.
