I am suspect of some of the S&C coaches in all sports. In Boxing a fighter can build stamina and solid conditioning by the simple "old school" method. Early morning run, good nutrition, hard work in the boxing gym and sparring with good partners. Those workouts coupled with a good Trainer who knows how to motivate his fighter and a fighters will to win will wins fights. Correct me if i am wrong but did Gatti or Ward have S&C coaches for their 3 battles? They displayed tremendous conditioning that almost seemed super human!! It worked for the greats of yesterday and today but sadly these nouveau S&C trainers/boxing experts have privy to these fighters and access which enables them to slip them PED's via shakes, edibles and or possibly even smelling salts at ringside during the fight without the fighter or head trainer even knowing what is taking place. I believe in my heart that many if not most fighters are NOT cheats and do not condone this behavior. Brandon Rio's for one even though he tested positive IMHO had no clue. The guy is a born fighter and its doubtful that he was aware of what might have been taking place. Same goes for Manny...cheating isn't in his nature or DNA. Chino in that alleged controversy with the salts most likely had no frigging clue either. Can't say the same about Margarito loading his gloves but by the nature of his fighting persona there is a good chance he had no clue either. Who really knows??? Last - The head trainers need to police these S&C coaches better and not let them have private influence and access to the fighter. It's obvious that Freddie was suspect about you know who and did something about it and Garcia IMHO had the same feeling...he cut the guy loose but he chose to be politically correct in his statements to avoid any further controversy regarding his stable of fighters which was a smart move on his part. Bottom line : in many cases when things aren't working going "Back to Basics" is usually a smart remedy.Last edited by LAPete; 07-09-2014, 03:10 PM.

And a lot of them threw crappy punches that didn't have steam behind them. See how a prime Kassim Ouma throws punches and stays busy for the full 12 rounds, that ought to give you an idea how a lot of the old fighters threw punches. And I'm not talking about the exceptions.

The old school way is tried and true. Proven to work over and over again for generations of fighters.
Nothing wrong with trying out new methods but they better give equal or better results otherwise what's the point?
I will say that Crossfit did seem to be effective for Robert Guerrero against Kamegai in terms of stamina. Skillwise he could have done better but that was a taxing fight and he was still going strong at the end.
