A scuffle broke out between "The Golden Boy" Oscar De La Hoya and Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga on the set of a televsion commercial shoot in a downtown Los Angeles wharehouse today. Both fighters exchanged negative comments between takes while being asked to repeatedly walk towards each other and particpate in a stare down. Eventually the trash-talking escalated to the point where shoving began and both boxers had to be restrained. It will be interesting to see what transpires on this week's media tour to kick off the promotion for their May 6 showdown at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and on HBO Pay-Per-View. The tour will start on Tuesday in Los Angeles, make two stops in Houston and Chicago on Wednesday, and conclude on Thursday in New York.Comment

Originally posted by JoartCCThis is the usual scripted stuff Hoya and Yorga's been up to lately. All to hype the fight and call attention.
Why does no one seem to understand this?
Mayorga knows that his best chance at victory is to make the other fighter engage in a brawl. What is the easiest way to incite a brawl? But verbally abusing and taunting your opponent so that come fight time, they are off their gameplan and only want to swing with you.
Everyone knows that Oscar, stamina willing, could box circles around "El Matador" all night long. So when Mayorga starts his pre-fight antics, which I happen to like, why do people who don't know Mayorga's game or boxing for that matter, insist it's just to hype up a promotion??Comment

Dela Hoya is as much privy to this one as Yorga is. These are common promotional stuff some fighters do to call attention (although of course, it's rather crass and lame). Hoya, if he's really a professional will simply shrug it off and laugh Yorga's taunts. Pure common sense. Hoya's playing with it to simply draw more attention to the fight.
Which is of course, rather low.Comment

Open your eyes. Mayorga can be outboxed. We've seen it. But other than Tito, he can't be outslugged. He says those things to get under his opponents skin and make them want to trade shots with him. Cory Spinks never bought into it and stuck with his gameplan and it worked. Vernon did not and it ended in a a 3rd TKO and a 12rd UD.
If it was any other fighter, you could make a claim to "just hyping up a promotion", but if you really knew fighters strengths and weaknesses, which you don't, then you would see this a mile away.Comment

I hope DLH still can fight , it has been a long lay-off.If he is still a shadow of his former self he should UD mayorga but if he is still pretty damn good he will probably stop him in the mid to late rounds IMO.Comment

You gotta love Mayorga, scripted or not. This dude's nuts, and he always does the unthinkable. This is probably all scripted, but a lot of people will tune in just to watch Mayorga's crazy ass, myself included. De la Hoya will pick him apart, and probably get a late stoppage, but I'd love to see the upset.Comment
