The amateur game is just so different now that is hard to compare, it is a similar sport and being a good amateur does count for something but with the difference between the two types the best pros are more than likely to wash out before they even reach the biggest stages of amateur competition which could be a detriment to them looking to go pro.
Now they might in fact be less skillful or worse athletically, since boxing requires specific athletic talent and a strong mentality that is forged. Currently most top end athletes don't have the taste to be built that way.
