Martinez loses his first fight in a long time to a good fighter like Cotto, and suddenly he needs to retire? If he had lost that badly to a bum, I would agree. If his knees are indeed shot, I would agree and question why he took the fight in the first place. As it stands, I think he needs to take some time to regroup and assess what the true state of his body and mind are as it relates to boxing.

Answer to question why did Sergio take the fight is simply 1.5+ million dollars. It is not only the injuries (knee, hands) but also the advanced age. Next fight he would be 40 yrs. old. And I agree that in terms of cost the Chavez Jr. fight took a lot of him. Sergio won that night but he hit so much Jr. that he broke his hand and he injured his knee during the knock down in the very last round. He paid a very high cost winning against JCC Jr.
