Martinez snapped Cotto with 2 jabs that were timed exc. and they stopped Cotto in his tracks and you could see the physical differences there. Obviously immediately after Cotto hit him with the L. Hook which sent him against the ropes and then knocked down.
I'm sorry it just looked like his knee going(body) were the main factor.
I have tore my ACL and broke 5 vertebrae in my back in a car accident where I went through the windshield & landed on a log. Later the hospital weren't listening to my complaints about my knee and tried to bend it the next a.m. while I was on morphine and that hurt worse than my back had w/o morphine. Obvious point is I just think its incredible that he could do anything with those issues. I have knee issues a lot, but not terribly serious, my back is fine as long as I'm in good shape. Also im no stranger to getting beat up as ive probably woke in the E.R. 20-30 times from a later developed seizure disorder and have had many more than that #. I actually started boxing after the car accident had happened.
I don't agree that this was just simply Cotto destroying Martinez.
Freddie Roach, I am a huge fan of, and a few years ago and before Cotto would've fired him because of his mentality at that time. Too bad for Cotto because he wasn't using his full arsenal.
I have tremendous respect for Martinez being able to go that long AND actually being able to box(move, punch, defend, etc.) not to mention having a great fighter like Cotto beautifully assaulting him. Also ,if I understood correctly, his corner stopped it. Not him.
One last thing(sorry), HBO commentary is not the greatest and pretty annoying to listen to.
I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of negative reactions, but this is an honest, objective statement.
Either way both fighters deserve praise.
Not from me man. Great post.
During the fight against Murray I remember how Sergio's knees just snapped as he went down, barley able to get up again. I though the surgery would at least leave him 70%-80% for the fight but that's not the case.
At least in my opinon , the only sad thing is that we didnt get to see both guys at their best. Sergio was just a sad crippled guy in there, and Cotto simply did his thing. Had Sergio been in at least acceptable shape we would have seen one of those wars which either guy could have won, but at least it wouldnt have been one guy going at a sitting duck.
For Cotto fanboys I guess their happy. For Martinez nuthugger I guess they are crying somewhere. For boxing fans such as myself its just a bland sensation of not getting the chance to see the great fight I expected. I would have preffed that Martinez team had cancelled the fight if he wasnt ready for it rather than do that display.
Notice that Martinez makes no exuses but at the same time he applogyses mant times to both the Argentine and PR crowd, and he does so for not having been able to provide the show he once got us used to.
