Its not really luck as much as it is knowing when he has a chance of beating someone and when he doesnt. At the end of the day its business. No one forced Martinez to fight injured to a point where anyone A or even B level fighter would have beaten him. Murray came pretty close in his last fight, so that shows what shape he's in, and Cotto fought an even older version of Martinez.
Now for the giving props to Cotto part: he didnt "steal" the fight like we so often see these days and he didnt force any pillow gloves at the last minute.
Smart? Sure.
