And I'm sure he's kicking himself in the ass this morning for not fighting Martinez instead of Maidana last month. But Cotto offers a shot at the legitimate middleweight title. Its a fight he would be favored in. And outside of Manny, its the biggest paying fight out there. Only thing now is that even as a FA, Cotto is wanting to work with Arum. And now that GBP has split and Oscar is working with Arum. Cotto has some leverage because he can make a pile of money with Canelo. I know one thing. Floyd should be rooting like hell for Lara next month.
Good take...No disgrace, in Losing to Cotto, for a MW Title,
but Pac's SPEED and POWER, brings potential Humiliation...

Without The Pac Fight, can Our Hero, really Claim to Be TBE???

    • Team Cotto was smart to take this fight against a fading champ with questionable wheels. Without that base and mobility, Martinez is not the faster, more powerful puncher.

That said, Cotto moved up in weight class, "went in over his head," to tackle an opponent whose style was potentially all wrong for him. It was a CHALLENGE he accepted with relish. He was not afraid to lose. This is the type of performance that earns Cotto HOF credentials.

And kudos to Martinez for his bravery and class.

Both fighters represented the sport as true champions.

        • Please.....historic my azz.

Applauding this win is like applauding a beat down on a paraplegic. This was not Sergio the champ, it was Sergio the gimp. Only Ricans that applaud Danny Garcia as the new Man from Puerto Rico believe this was an honorable and valiant showing of boxing skill. The tattooed wonder couldn't knock out a guy that was rolling around like a bowling pin or weeble.

Martinez should not of taken the fight, but Cotto will take the win like any welfare recipient. he couldn't have earned it against a one legged Sergio let alone two legs. Last noght Sergio had no legs. Party up Ricans. GGG or the Red Head will cream your comic book hero.

I would venture a guess that the vast majority of keyboard warriors here would struggle to run let alone walk a 5K tomorrow if their life depended on it, but they sure seem to know a lot about the human body.

Sergio Martinez is almost 40 years old. He has had two right knee surgeries, and a surgery on his ankle. For many athletes, a single knee surgery is effectively a career-ender. Sergio's comments about his second surgery indicate that the extent of the injuries to his knee were very serious (he wasn't just dealing with a partially torn meniscus). If he wasn't a champion, I suspect those around him would have more firmly suggested that he consider retirement. Instead, he chose to push his body to its breaking point.

Bottom line: it's not an excuse to say that Martinez's injuries and age (which are related) caught up with him last night. That's a reality most fighters eventually face. Martinez lost to a great champion who deserves credit regardless of the circumstances under which he won, but that doesn't mean that you can pretend the circumstances were different than they actually were.
The hopeful Puerto Ricans that hail Garcia as the winner of the fight with Herrera will claim Cotto beat the man. He mugged a guy that should have been in a wheel chair. Like the Puerto Rican version of the Knock Out game.

Favor him against GGG. Alvarez. Make them make the fight. Bet they don't

                  • First and foremost I am not a heart-driven fan for either. If anything I was always a more of a Cotto fan. I used to hate Martinez actually. Cotto showed his physical skills and executed his gameplan perfectly, but he didn't have much to worry about obviously and mental pressure seemed to always be his enemy. At like 2:05 in the 1st rd. Martinez snapped Cotto with 2 jabs that were timed exc. and they stopped Cotto in his tracks and you could see the physical differences there. Obviously immediately after Cotto hit him with the L. Hook which sent him against the ropes and then knocked down.
I'm sorry it just looked like his knee going(body) were the main factor.
I have tore my ACL and broke 5 vertebrae in my back in a car accident where I went through the windshield & landed on a log. Later the hospital weren't listening to my complaints about my knee and tried to bend it the next a.m. while I was on morphine and that hurt worse than my back had w/o morphine. Obvious point is I just think its incredible that he could do anything with those issues. I have knee issues a lot, but not terribly serious, my back is fine as long as I'm in good shape. Also im no stranger to getting beat up as ive probably woke in the E.R. 20-30 times from a later developed seizure disorder and have had many more than that #. I actually started boxing after the car accident had happened.
I don't agree that this was just simply Cotto destroying Martinez.
Freddie Roach, I am a huge fan of, and a few years ago and before Cotto would've fired him because of his mentality at that time. Too bad for Cotto because he wasn't using his full arsenal.
I have tremendous respect for Martinez being able to go that long AND actually being able to box(move, punch, defend, etc.) not to mention having a great fighter like Cotto beautifully assaulting him. Also ,if I understood correctly, his corner stopped it. Not him.
One last thing(sorry), HBO commentary is not the greatest and pretty annoying to listen to.
I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of negative reactions, but this is an honest, objective statement.
Either way both fighters deserve praise.
