What I don't understand is why people think Cotto and Freddie would have taken this fight at the Maddison Square Garden if they did not think they could beat Sergio. It was only a few years ago this fight was mentioned at 154 and Cotto was the Favorite. Only a few years ago people said Cotto should have fought Chavez Jr at 154 and Cotto was the heavy favorite.

It's only now that people say Cotto has no shot. An the 40 year old with extensive Knee surgeries and Shoulder problems is the overwhelming favorite.

Lets put this as it is, this is the best all around boxer Martinez has ever faced, speed, power, ring intelligence. The only win that Martinez gets in my books that was impressive was Kelly Pavlik. Besides that he has fought a bunch of unknown brits at the time he fought them. And Paul Williams a guy the was just volume and got exposed by Carlos Quintan the first fight.

Martinez has horrible defense and loves to exchange. The body lesson Cotto is going to give to this guy is going to make him wish he did not solely rely on movement to win fights.

This is going to be a great fight Cotto may or may not win, but for everyone to discard Cotto as the far inferior opposition with no shot, really knows nothing about boxing.

Yet it never hurt his popularity. Why? Because he fights the way a fighter should fight. All heart and balls to the walls.
I'm hoping they can pull a miracle win, but I do see many difficulties in the match up. I could point them out, but it's in no way a disrespect for Cotto taking this fight. I just see it more as, damn, Cotto got some serious cajones!
Well said young man. I am going into this with some hope, and if Cotto cannot pull it off, so beit. He tried. He challenged himself and for that, he gets my respect.

And to those already trying to detract ANY credit from Cotto should he win to a "shot Martinez" or a "bad knee havin Martinez," Come on man... Cotto is NOT a 160lb fighter and Cotto is not exactly in his prime either. I can play that game too: " If Sergio beats this post car accident Cotto who never really regained his right hand again, it will not be the REAL Cotto..."

      Etc.

So Martinez is in his Prime? Son you need to watch tape on Martinez last fight. This is not the same Martinez that fought Kelly Pavlik or Paul Williams.

You missed a very CLEAR point I made son. NONE of them are in their prime. So all this BS about Martinez being "old" is just that, BS. Preemptive excuses should the HEAVY favorite lose. Recognize.

          ONE.

                Reality check

Its true Martinez beat an alcoholic kelly pavlik probably the true happy hour pavlik came out cause hes nowhere today. He also knocked out paul williams beautiful shot i must admit yet paul did outbox him in the first fight. As for Chavez hes not a boxer hes a guy fighting in his dads shadow making money off people that want to see the ressurection of sr. Next martin murray a brawler can take a punch and give one no boxing skills at all. This is Martinez first time fighting a legitamate hall of famer . He thinks he will knock out Cotto cause Cotto is the smaller guy. Pavlik ,williams, and most fighters Martinez fought were bigger than he was ,as for cotto he hasnt been the bigger man in years in the ring but the opposition hes fought is the best in the game. So dont be surprised if martinez is confused and ends up crying after he loses

the only factor that can change the way this fight will go is how martinez's body holds out ... if he's knees go/he's carrying an injury like v Murray then yeah Cotto could win. If Martinez is in chavez shape on the other hand Cotto is gonna have a real bad night.

You managed to find a way to knock practically every single one of Martinez's wins. lol I suppose it's possible if one tries hard enough. Did you watch the first P Will fight? I did. I thought Sergio pulled it off, but there's no doubt the decision was highly debatable. To say Paul outboxed Martinez implies Williams outclassed "Maravilla." Not true at all.

Margarito is a stronger better chinned guy than Martinez and it took 11 rounds of Bricks to the face to make Cotto quite.
