Adonis Stevenson was able to fend off a late rally from Andrzej Fonfara to retain his World light heavyweight championship on May 24 in Canada.

What the 36-year old southpaw failed to retain, however, was the level of viewership that helped him rise from cult favorite to box office attraction.

The aforementioned light heavyweight championship managed to generate an average 672,000 viewers – according to Nielsen Media Research - over the course of their 12-round main event, which aired live on SHOWTIME. The bout topped out at 800,000 viewers, a respectable number on its own but paling in comparison to the past numbers produced by the defending champion. [Click Here To Read More]

      Good riddance.

Remember this is the fight Adonis Stevenson chose instead of unifying with Kovalev. This is the fight he wanted to price himself out for after signing wit Haymon, that HBO didn't want to pay for. Not Kovalev

        Broke his hand my ass.

Thurman avg'ed 800k then what did it peak at? Sad that a prospect is averaging more than a "lineal champ" lol. Pl

There will always be a ratings disparity and HBO knows this. On average they have about 3 million more subscribers so there will always be more people watching on HBO

              Payment in kind

Stevenson lack of viewership is indeed showing you that KNOWLEDGEABLE boxing fans vote with their eyes. They boycotted Frauds last fight successfully ( and yes indeed Frauds viewership is more of a product of his opponent than him) and I think the Stevenson fight is another payment in kind for cowardice. If HBO and Showtime keep shortchanging their viewers by manipulation of competitors I see a migration away from the sport or fans using alternative viewing methods that won't compliment HBO or Showtimes coffers of bloated purses for average fights.

Cause boycotting fights is the better route to take for the sport?

Yes less viewers is a positive thing

Boxing cans have wised up to showtimes crap.

Were fired of fifs like paulie vs zAb.
                    Trout vs Lara
Bhop vs whoever the bum of the month is.

Every time I look at a 3 fight card on Showtime, every fight is a fight that as a fan, I never asked for, and every fight has a Haymon fighter on it. Fans want the fights THEY want, not the one that pay Haymon.

No HBO subscribers complained when GBP and haymon got the boot from HBO.
