styles make fights. mosley being a california native he was used to fighting mexican style fighters and his punching power and iron chin didnt hurt either. he could just hit tony at will (like everyone) but being such a massive puncher he was able to hurt him more than anyone and he was smart to invest in the body. turned his aggression against him and hurt him coming in.

plus he was motivated, really motivated. everyone was writing him off and like mentioned even laughing at the notion that he had a chance. he felt disrespected and showed up to prove a point, they say every fighter has that on last great performance in them. that was never more true than for shane mosley.

knowing that his career was pretty much over before he went in the ring against mosley due to the fact he was outed as a cheater by richardson was the ONLY thing on margs mind, not shane.

helped that shane clinched, though, but that was minimal as it pertains to the outcome of the fight IMO.

Shane is faster by alot so he can get off first, then grab and wait for break, Shane is a physically strong guy and closer in size Tony than Cotto, so this wasn't too hard for him. The gameplan was land clean effective shots while finding away to take Tony's best asset away which was his forward aggression and volume punching.

Mosley fought a lot of fighters like Margarito in the sense that Magarito has that typical come forward and throw a lot of punches kind of style. Mosley always threw first and clinched when the timing was right. He also packed a lot of speed and power and he was hitting Margarito with damn near everything he threw at him.

That is why if you are a favorite you want to step on the other guys throat right away and not allow him to gain any momentum or confidence, because once a guy has that it can make a fight exponentially tougher no matter the talent gap.
