Great post.I know Wlad wants the green and gold in his collection but I'd like the Pulev fight to get done. Pulev's been screwed over by half the other contenders out there. It's about time he gets what he's after whether he can handle it or not. He's done what was asked of him.
Thankfully Glazkov saw to it we don't have to see another cruiserweight challenger.as much as I like Adamek,a fight versus the champion woul have been a truly shocking match up.
Povetkin was the last of the previous wave of opponents.now it's onto the likes of Pulev and Wilder.we may even find out if Tyson Fury genuinely wants to face Wladimir.doubtful I know, but if he remains unbeaten, however unlikely that sounds,he may have no other choice but to step up at some point.Comment

Nobody said that. Everyone knew Povetkin would get smashed.People said Haye would test him. Povetkin would test him. The thing that strikes me about Pulev is that he's a very good allround fighter, does everything well but doesn't do anything outstanding. He's a big, skilled boxer from the Eastern European school, but this could be a carbon copy of the Chagaev fight. Let's see.
Because I'm a big fan of the heavyweight division?

If the fight had happened 2 years earlier, as planned, it would have been a better scrap IMO. It didn't help that the fight was in Moscow, and bankrolled by a suspect source. No wonder Wladimir was concerned.
Let's not forget, Povetkin was an Olympic Gold Medalist and actually looked v. impressive in his first few years as a pro.
Posters on here calling him a 'bum' are plain ******s.Comment

Nobody's saying Povetkin is a bum. He had the best resume of anyone not named Klitschko - but no matter when the fight had happened he would always be a 6'1½" guy with a short reach and only decent power. Little head movement to go with it.If the fight had happened 2 years earlier, as planned, it would have been a better scrap IMO. He's the kind of guy who will give most guys a very good fight, but in terms of fighting such a big and powerful guy as Wlad who has an excellent jab, it was never a good match-up for him.
Probably the best they ever did was to duck Wlad for two years. He got a huge payday out of it, and fought a worse edition of Wlad than the one he would have fought in 2011/2012.
It was a good win on paper, but nobody thought Povetkin had a chance of winning, I think everybody would agree.Comment

That's not necessarily true.
Arreola, Stiverne, Chisora, Valuev, Maskaev, Dimitrenko, Gomes, Boytsov, Helenius, Fury, Pulev & Adamek are guys that have featured in the top 10 over the last 5-6 years that he hasn't fought for one reason or another.
Surely, a little less Wach, Rahman, Pianeta, Mormeck and Leapai could be exchanged for a little more of the above guys.Comment

I wouldn't call Maskaev, Dimi, Gomez, or Boytsov quality misses. Fury is still developing and that may come. Helenium has been hurt. He really hasn't missed much. Arreola or Stiverne may yet come and I would hardly call Arreola quality or even a proven contender. Dozen years as a pro and he still has never beaten anyone you'd consider a real contender. That's not necessarily true.

I agree that they probably weren't 'quality' as in, genuinely good heavyweight fighters.I wouldn't call Maskaev, Dimi, Gomez, or Boytsov quality misses. Fury is still developing and that may come. But they rank up there with the likes of Eddie Chambers, Ibragimov, Samuel Peter and the likes of that standard.
Going by that standard, then Povetkin is probably the only real contender there's been over the last 4-5 years - because he's the only one who's fought other top 10 guys.Comment
